About Light Fiber

3M™ HL High Luminance Light Fiber is a solid-core‚ side-emitting optical light fiber which is illuminated from the end(s). It is a member of the fiber optics family and is made from a proprietary acrylic resin. It offers unique properties that allow it to be application-flexible and complementary to neon (cold cathode) or LED chip strips. It can be illuminated by a variety of commercially-available light sources including metal halide (HID) and LEDs‚ depending on the application’s performance requirements. It is suitable for indoor and outdoor applications whether functional or decorative.

Light fiber typically consumes less energy per linear foot than neon or other cold cathode lights. It employs lower-watt‚ metal-halide lamps or LEDs for illumination.

3M™ HL High Luminance Light Fiber allows visually-clean‚ uninterrupted‚ extensive runs of light. Unlike neon‚ it doesn’t require frequent standoffs. And unlike LED chip strips‚ there are fewer seams. The ability to hide the light source enhances the overall effect. Also‚ the lighting source for light fiber is usually at one or both ends. Thus‚ the visual integrity of a message‚ design or brand identity typically won’t exhibit an unsightly partial failure‚ i.e.‚ lit and un-lit sections.

Design Flexibility
Light fiber is flexible. It can be formed to create a unique design element or replicate a customer brand. Also‚ there is no height restriction associated with its installation placement.

Safe-Handling Properties
Light fiber’s inherent structure makes it safer to handle than alternative light sources. Unlike neon and LED chip strips‚ it is cool to the touch when illuminated. Thus‚ it can be used when an application calls for light that could come in close proximity to people. Also‚ it doesn’t emit UV rays and it won’t shatter and discharge environmentally-hazardous gases. With its remote light source‚ there’s no electrical hazard along the fiber.

Multiple Colors
When used with a color-changing illuminator‚ light fiber can emit different colors‚ according to a pre-set program. This additional flexibility helps achieve different lighting effects without changing the fixture or fixture surround.

Easy Maintenance
Illuminators can be located (by design) in areas that are safe and accessible‚ thereby reducing the complexity and cost of maintenance. Downtime is also reduced.
