Seattle, WA (July 25, 2007) — Rick Lawler, VIP Graphix, San Pedro, CA, drove away from the Specialty Graphics Imaging Association (SGIA) Expo and convention in Orlando in a tricked-out Roush Stage 3 Mustang as the winner of the 3M Graphics Market Center’s "Wrap to Win a Roush Contest."
The winning vehicle is a Dodge Viper wrapped as part of a major fundraiser for the Children's Safety Network (CSN). In cooperation with the Basketball Hall of Fame, the wrapped vehicle was signed by 60 of the greatest players and coaches in the game. The vehicle was auctioned for $500,000 with proceeds helping to pay for distribution of 250,000 Safe Family CDs. It also generated an estimated $300,000 in publicity for the organization.
CSN serves state maternal and child health staff and other public health department personnel who are responsible for preventing injuries and violence to children. The organization works with national organizations and Federal agencies responsible for promoting child and adolescent health and safety.
According to Lawler, "The reason I use 3M for wraps is the warranty and quality of the products. We have tried all brands and wrapping materials and nothing comes close."
To win this 415-horsepower high-performance vehicle specially engineered by Roush-Fenway Industries, graphics manufacturers were invited to submit their best vehicle wraps for consideration. 3M announced the contest at the International Sign Association (ISA) Expo in Las Vegas in April.
From a large pool of entries, the field was narrowed to 25 finalists and the winning wrap was then selected by a panel of qualified judges from the Society for Environmental Graphics Design (SEGD).
The majority of the 25 finalists attended the announcement of the winner during 3M’s customer event, October 24, at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort. Photos of vehicles entered by the finalists were on display at the event and in the 3M booth. They also may be viewed online at www.3Mgraphics.com.
To be considered for the contest, a wrap must have incorporated 3M products including any combination of the following 3M media and overlaminates:
- 3M™ Controltac™ Graphic Film Graphic Film with Comply™ Adhesive IJ180C
- 3M™ Controltac™ Graphic Film with Comply™ v2 Adhesive IJ180Cv2
- 3M™ Scotchcal™ Perforated Window Graphic Film IJ8171
- 3M™ Scotchcal™ Gloss Overlaminate 8518
- 3M™ Scotchcal™ Luster Overlaminate 8519
- 3M™ Scotchcal™ Optically Clear Overlaminate 8914
Judging criteria included the aesthetic appeal of the wrap, use of space and the professionalism of the installation and the impact or expected impact of the wrap for the end user/brand owner.
For the purposes of the contest, a wrap was defined as at least 75 percent graphic coverage of the vehicle body. Window graphics were optional but encouraged where appropriate. A "vehicle" was defined as any passenger car, van or truck — no straight trucks, semi-trailers, buses or trains.
The Roush Mustang, with an estimated value of $49,000, came equipped with a ROUSHCharged 4.6L powertrain, seven-piece aerobody kit, hi-end audio system, 18-inch forged chrome wheels with high-performance tires, Roush suspension system, 14" brakes, leather seats and more. The "gas guzzler" tax was even included.
The vehicle was made available courtesy the 3M Graphics Market Center and Roush-Fenway Industries.
