Application Guide
Listed below are key applications for HFE-7100. Documents specific to the application are listed to the right.
Carrier Solvents for Fingerprint Formulations
Used to replace CFCs, HFCs, HCFCs and flammable solvents in fingerprint formulations for ninhydrin or DFO, HFE-7100 works in the formula to provide optimally crisp ridge detail. HFE-7100s high wetting index assures maximum penetration and delivery of the ninhydrin or DFO to deposited amino acids, thus finding and developing more prints than other formulations. And HFE-7100 is compatible with a wide range of inks, papers and materials thus protecting the evidence from damage and blurred inks.

Additional characteristics of HFE-7100 include low toxicity, zero ozone depletion potential, low global warming potential and the solvent is nonflammable.

Cleaning Fluids
Its boiling point (61°C) and increased solvency make Novec fluid HFE-7100 an ideal cleaning solvent in applications like vapor degreasing, wet cleaning and FOUP cleaning. Low surface tension helps it to penetrate into tight spaces found in delicate electronic equipment - providing a thorough and complete clean.

HFE-7100 is non-ozone depleting, is not a volatile organic compound (VOC) and is approved without restrictions under the US EPA's Significant New Alternatives Program (SNAP).

Depending on the type of soil to be cleaned, Novec fluid HFE-7100 can be used "neat" or in combination with other solvents. The product is compatible with most metals, plastics and elastomers.

Carrier Solvents for Fingerprinting Formulations

3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid HFE-7100 is an ideal carrier solvent for Ninhydrin and DFO formulations used for latent fingerprint development on porous surfaces. Novec fluid HFE-7100 is a selective solvent - as demonstrated by its inertness to most inks - and does not appreciably dissolve the amino acids transferred to the porous substrate in a fingerprint. Its surface tension is much lower relative to hydrocarbon solvents like petroleum ether (13.6 dynes/cm at 25°C vs. 20 dynes/cm at 25°C), allowing Novec fluid HFE-7100 to more easily and thoroughly carry dissolved Ninhydrin or DFO to where it is most useful - namely the edges of fingerprint ridges. And because HFE-7100 fluid does not absorb moisture, background "noise" on the print is minimized.

3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid HFE-7100 has been identified as an excellent carrier solvent in latent fingerprint development on porous surfaces by three independent forensic laboratories - Fingerprint Department, Insitut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmie Nationale, France; Fingerprint Research Group, Police Scientific Development Branch, United Kingdom; and Forensic Services Division, Oregon State Police, Oregon, United States.

They found that 3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluid HFE-7100:
* produces ridge crispness as good or better than CFC-113 with both Ninhydrin and DFO
* causes minimal running or smearing in a wide variety of inks and substrates
* has an excellent safety and environmental profile
