We have experience using composite materials in wire and cable applications. One application is for overhead power transmission where we have worked with customers to design AMC reinforced high voltage overhead power cables. These cables have combined mechanical, electrical, and thermal requirements for which designs using strong, lightweight, conductive metal matrix composite materials can greatly increase performance.
We have the experience and software to model the behavior of a cable and determine the applicability for using a composite material as a strength/electrical member in cable or other continuous product. As a next step we work with customers to develop optimized cable designs. Composite materials allow us to tailor the composition of the composite and matrix to obtain optimal material properties.
We have the experience to design composite material systems with the fiber, fiber volume fraction and matrix material that are optimal for an application. We are exploring many electro-mechanical cable applications where the high modulus, high strength to weight ratio, low thermal elongation and high conductivity of AMCs and other composites increase performance.
