     AUSTIN, Texas – January 7, 2009  - 3M innovators have developed a way for design engineers to achieve multi-gigahertz performance from industry standard 2 mm printed-circuit-board connectors, using 2 mm shielded controlled impedance cable assemblies. New development kits from 3M let design engineers test drive these innovative cable assemblies for their applications.

     The Shielded Controlled Impedance (SCI) Cable Assembly Development Kit, 2 mm from the 3M Electronic Solutions Division is designed to help engineers assess, test and design the appropriate high performance 2 mm SCI cable-to-board solution for their application.

     When used with standard 2 mm latch/eject headers from 3M for multi-gigahertz cable-to-board applications , the SCI connectors save valuable board real estate without sacrificing performance compared to the BNC or SMA connectors frequently used with coaxial, and the specialized twinaxial connectors used with twinaxial cable. This is particularly true for applications where multiple high-speed coaxial or twinaxial cable-to-board connectors need to be bundled together.

     This solution is ideal for a variety of high-performance or high-signal integrity cable-to-board applications in the industrial control/factory automation, medical, test and instrumentation, video post production equipment and military electronics industries.

     Designers can use the development kit to verify signal integrity, impedance matching and crosstalk performance for designs that require up to 1 Gbps single-ended performance per signal line or 5 Gbps differential performance per signal pair, bundled multi-line cable-to-board solution requiring mechanical reliability such as that offered by a latch/eject connector.

     The development kit contains everything required to assess, test and design a high performance 2mm cable-to-board solution, including:

  • CD-ROM containing application note, test instruction sheet, technical sheets. The application note is illustrated with graphical data from actual lab tests under different test conditions.
  • Postage-paid reply card to request product updates and register the kit
  • 2 mm SCI differential and single-ended cable assemblies (twinaxial and coaxial), 24” length
  • 2x25 surface mount or through-hole 2 mm latch/eject headers
  • 2x25 carrier used for bundling together the SCI cable mount connectors
  • Optional specialized printed circuit board for testing
  • SMA connectors for testing, mounted on the PCB for development kits that include a printed circuit board
  • SMA connectors specified for development kits that do not include a printed circuit board
  • Test procedures document

AUSTIN, Texas – Mar. 5, 2009 - At the Embedded World Conference in Nuremberg, Germany, 3M unveiled a new Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Socket Connector engineered to deliver more than 7 Gbps backplane performance for systems based on 2 mm hard-metric connectors. System design engineers working with 2 mm hard-metric-based designs, such as VME or CompactPCI, can now dramatically increase overall system performance while preserving their existing investment.

The new UHM socket connector from 3M is designed to mate with industry-standard and widely available 2 mm hard-metric header connectors (IEC 61076-4-101). 2 mm hard-metric connectors are one of the most successful backplane connectors representing a greater than $200 million annual market growing at a rate of 12 to 14 percent annually. Patented "virtual coaxial box" shielding technology from 3M dramatically reduces the severe crosstalk commonly experienced by 2 mm hard-metric connectors at 1 to 1.5 Gbps speeds, enabling the new UHM socket connectors from 3M to achieve speeds greater than 7 Gbps.

"The 'virtual coaxial box' shielding technology from 3M is designed to dramatically reduce crosstalk and improve insertion loss when compared to standard 2 mm hard-metric sockets," said David Schneider, global business manager of Interconnect Solutions for 3M Electronic Solutions Division. "By increasing performance speeds to 7 Gbps or greater while maintaining PCB-footprint compatibility and intermateability, the new connector from 3M preserves the engineering investment in existing VME and cPCI designs and helps extend the life of these highly successful global standards."

Because the UHM socket connector is designed to be intermateable to 2 mm hard metric IEC 61076-4-101 headers and fully compatible with 2 mm hard-metric PCB footprints, the new UHM socket connector from 3M enables multi-gigabit performance in existing 2 mm hard-metric system designs. As a result, standard Compact PCI and VME 64x systems can support multi-gigabit, high-speed serial IO protocols such as SAS, SATA, Rapid IO, PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet without costly backplane redesigns or forklift upgrades.

The modular design of the UHM socket connector from 3M also gives system design engineers the flexibility to design the right level of signal integrity while satisfying required mechanical constraints. Five-row (A, B, CL, CR, AB) and eight- row (D, E, DE, FL, FR) form factors are available for high signal density. In addition, the socket supports 100 ohm differential pairs in rows or columns.

AUSTIN, Texas - Mar. 30, 2009 - For design engineers working with machine vision and industrial control applications, 3M now offers I/O connectors that conform to the popular IEEE 1394 – 1995 standard.

The latest addition to the family of I/O connectors from 3M Electronic Solutions Division, the new IEEE 1394 connectors from 3M consist of an assortment of 6-pin shielded I/O connectors and accessories. Built around a robust ribbon-style contact interface for reliable repetitive plug/unplug applications, the connector is capable of carrying either signal or power, allowing designers flexibility in the location of power supplies to peripheral devices.

All IEEE 1394 connectors from 3M are shielded for increased resistance to EMI/RFI, critical for use in sensitive control and vision applications. Though designed specifically to suit the challenging demands of machine vision and industrial control factory environments, the robust-connection, vibration-resistance and secure-latching features of the IEEE 1394 connectors from 3M make them suitable for an even wider variety of applications, including communications and specialty computing.

Additional features include RoHS compliance*; quick-release secure latching system for easy connect and disconnect in repetitive plug and unplug applications; and the ability to accept a wide range of wire gauges. Configurations include right-angle, upright through-hole plug (male) and right-angle, horizontal through-hole plug (male) for boardmount connectors and wiremount receptacles (female) with applicable latching shell kit.

AUSTIN, Texas – May 19, 2009 - The PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) has selected 3M's recently introduced Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) Socket Connector for the upcoming PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO standard.

The new PICMG 2.30 CompactPCI PlusIO draft standard is based on the current CompactPCI standard, PICMG 2.0, and will define the pin assignment and the function of the user pins on the J2 connector for 32-bit system slots. The J2 connector can then be used for transmission of a high density of high speed serial signals such as PCI Express, SAS/SATA, USB, and Gigabit Ethernet. The new UHM socket connector from 3M, in its J2 configuration, was chosen as the basis for the new standard due to its signal transmission quality and backward compatibility. In addition to maintaining PCB footprint compatibility and intermateability with current CompactPCI standard, PICMG 2.0, 3M's UHM socket connector shields each pin or pin pair individually, enabling over 7 Gbps signal performance in existing 2 mm hard-metric system designs. This allows end users of CompactPCI equipment to leverage their existing investment in PCI bus cards while using the same system for newer high speed serial data applications.

According to Manfred Schmitz of the PICMG CompactPCI Plus Working Group and MEN Mikro Elektronik, "The connector's impedance is ideally suited for transmitting single-ended as well as differentiated signals. Forward and backward compatibility is incorporated into the design and PCI Express, SATA, USB and Ethernet are now available on the backplane in addition to the legacy PCI bus."

"Because the UHM socket connector from 3M is designed to be mechanically intermateable to the hard-metric connector for CompactPCI, we can easily upgrade the performance of our existing designs," said Barbara Schmitz, chief marketing officer with MEN. The UHM socket connector is available in 5-row (A, B, CL, CR, AB) and 8-row (D, E, DE, FL, FR) form factors allowing a very high signal density – 101 signals per linear inch for the 8-row and 63 signals per linear inch for the 5-row.

Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (RAND) licensing for claims in 3M's patents and patent applications that are necessary to implement the new PICMG 2.30 Compact PCI PlusIO standard is available immediately. The 773 monitor is the latest addition to the 3M Down to Earth family of monitors, which offers practical and cost effective solutions for electrostatic discharge (ESD) in electronics assembly. It is designed to meet the needs of manufacturers of hard disk drives, printed circuit boards, defense and aerospace equipment, and medical devices.

The 773 monitor accurately measures ground impedance in automated tools while they are in operation, allowing immediate corrective action to improve production yields. The monitor’s realtime communication and audio alarm allows for immediate shut down should impedance values exceed facility standards. AUSTIN, Texas – June 2, 2009 - 3M has released a new, universal test and measurement platform that offers a highly expandable, cost-reducing solution to manufacturers looking for accurate electrical event detection.

The new 3M brand EM Eye Meter from the 3M Electronic Solutions Division provides three devices in one unit. The meter consists of a base unit and three separate sensors for electromagnetic interference (EMI), radio frequency (RF) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) detection. The modular design can save manufacturers money by allowing them to purchase the functionality they need, when they need it.

The EM Eye Meter instantly displays information on its color touch screen and logs data on an SD card. The 3M meter is the only known one of its kind currently on the market that offers a touch screen display, offering incomparable convenience and ease of use. The meter's hand-held size provides portability and allows manufacturers to check their control plans more often, potentially reducing production disruptions.

The ESD sensor identifies steps in the process where ESD events occur and verifies that ESD control methods are functioning as designed, helping to reduce the cost of controls and increase the speed of diagnosis. It also contains an ESD event counter that tracks the number of events above the set threshold and records discharge strength so that immediate, effective adjustments can be made.

The EMI sensor detects and measures transient signals, minimizing interference with normal operation of sensitive equipment. The RF sensor detects receptions of transmitted signals. The sensor provides for exceptional sensitivity and true RF input.

The EM Eye meter can be used in a broad range of manufacturing settings, including printed circuit boards, hard disk drives, defense and aerospace, medical equipment and semi-conductor. The meter is also a good fit for companies that install and manage mobile phone towers.

3M and SUSS Announce Agreement on Temporary Wafer Bonding Technology to Enable 3-D Semiconductors



St. Paul, Minn. – June 22, 2009 – 3M, a leading supplier of advanced materials to the semiconductor industry, and SUSS MicroTec, a leading supplier of semiconductor processing equipment, today announced an agreement to expand access to 3M Wafer Support System (WSS) equipment for temporary wafer bonding of ultrathin wafers required for 3-D packaging. As part of this non-exclusive agreement, SUSS MicroTec becomes an authorized equipment supplier for the 3M WSS and will manufacture and sell XBC300 and CBC300 wafer bonders configured to use 3M's WSS materials including 3M Liquid UV-Curable Adhesive and Light-To-Heat Conversion coating. Under the agreement, both companies will work closely to address customer demands for high-performance process solutions that support high-volume manufacturing with a competitive cost of ownership.

3M WSS uses processes and materials for temporary wafer bonding to support wafer thinning and processing of ultra thin wafers for 3-D packaging. 3M's innovative use of a UV-curable adhesive for wafer bonding to glass carriers provides robust wafer support throughout wafer grinding. This is particularly important in the multiple high-temperature cycles required in subsequent wafer processing steps. After processing, 3M's unique Light-To-Heat Conversion layer allows low stress, room temperature debonding of the thinned wafer directly to the tape carrier. The thinned wafer is supported throughout the entire process reducing warpage, stress and process complexity compared to other processes that require high-temperature exposure and stress to the thinned wafer, or solvents to release the temporary bonding material. 3M's WSS enables wafer processing currently in high-volume production at multiple semiconductor sites worldwide.

AUSTIN, Texas – June 25, 2009 - The new 19-micron 3M Embedded Capacitance Material (ECM), introduced by 3M Electronic Solutions Division, offers printed circuit board manufacturers a high-performing choice for cost-sensitive applications.

3M ECM is a thin, high-performance embedded capacitor laminate for printed circuit boards. The material helps reduce impedance, power bus noise, EMI and discrete capacitor count. The material is designed for OEMs with high-speed digital and low-pass filter designs and who seek to differentiate their products through dramatically improved performance and reduced size.

The new 19-micron thickness is suited for cost-sensitive equipment, such as handheld electronics, where functionality and size constraints drive design.

The material's high capacitive density allows it to perform the power supply decoupling function so that the number of discrete capacitors may be reduced, increasing useable board space and allowing for board size reduction.

3M ECM is compatible with most rigid and flex printed circuit board processing, including laser drilling. Fabricators and OEMs worldwide may use 3M ECM without a purchasing license from 3M. The material is RoHS compliant*.

AUSTIN, Texas – June 25, 2009 - 3M Electronic Solutions Division now offers new cabling solutions for users of high-performance digital camera applications. The High Speed 0.8 mm Cable Assemblies for Power over Camera Link (PoCL) from 3M is based on the PoCL base configuration for machine vision applications. The 3M family of 0.8 mm cable assemblies provides a broad range of interface solutions for Camera Link applications.

PoCL cables mate to industry standard Shrunk Delta Ribbon (SDR) 26-position PoCL camera connections. They enable machine vision cameras to be powered through the data cable rather than a separate power cable, which potentially eliminates the need for a power connector, saving board space and panel real estate, and allowing the design of smaller cameras.

PoCL cable assemblies from 3M are designed to offer high performance and reliability even in the toughest industrial settings. These assemblies are built to rigorous standards of workmanship with premium, quality materials. PoCL cable assemblies from 3M provide excellent signal integrity and low skew, helping customers attain low bit-error rates.

AUSTIN, Texas – July 8, 2009 - 3M Polycarbonate Ultra Precision Carrier (UPC) Tape 3000UP and 3000UB, recently introduced by the 3M Electronic Solutions Division, offers electronic component manufacturers a reliable and convenient means of protecting and transporting small electronic components, helping to minimize product loss.

3M UPC tape is designed to meet the growing challenges of packaging and transporting smaller and thinner electrical and electronic devices in tape and reel. The carrier tape is designed to minimize tilt, flip and migration of small and ultra thin components while in transport. The static-dissipative properties of 3M UPC tape provide excellent protection for static-sensitive components.

The carrier tape’s precision pocket cavity dimensions, tight tolerances and small pocket holes enhance component-in-pocket fit and registration of components. Unique tooling and precision processing technology from 3M enables form sizes as low as to 0603 (0201). Nominal UPC tape pocket-hole-forming capability, down to 0.20 mm, restricts movement and tilting to allow component placement into pocket cavities accurately during component insertion applications. An ultra-small pocket hole is available for vacuum to enhance component stability during taping applications. The carrier tape is also available in a clean room packaging format.

The carrier tape’s high-temperature resistance, high tensile strength and low shrinkage characteristics bolster dimensional accuracy for consistent component-in-pocket form. 3M UPC tape is compatible with most cover tapes on the market. 3M recommends 3M Universal Cover Tape (UCT) with pressure sensitive adhesive for optimal protection and system performance.
