3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids are used to remove skin oils, particulates, mounting wax residue and other soils encountered during the manufacture of optical components ranging from eyeglass and contact lenses to high performance photonics and lenses for industrial lasers.
For example, Novec 7200 fluid is being successfully used in a bi-solvent vapor degreasing process to remove mounting waxes employed in polishing optical lenses for laser equipment.
This new process is designed to replace nPB, a solvent classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC). In the first stage, a non-toxic, non-VOC, biodegradable solvent (methyl soyate) is used with ultrasonics to remove the mounting wax. In the second stage, Novec 7200 fluid removes the residual methyl soyate.
Novec 7200 fluid is a non-flammable, non ozone-depleting and low global warming compound used in a variety of solvent cleaning applications. Novec 7200 fluid is low in toxicity, and is not listed as a Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) or Volatile Organic Compound. It has also been certified by the SCAQMD as a Clean Air Solvent.

3M™ Novec™ EGC-1702 Electronic Coating is a clear, low viscosity solution of a fluorosilane polymer carried in a hydrofluoroether solvent. This material covalently bonds to glass and metal oxide layers, forming an effective anti-smudge coating on anti-reflective surfaces.
In the optical industry, it is used to deposit UV coatings and anti-scratch coatings on eyeglass lenses. It can also be used in a variety of electronics applications, such as anti-reflective (AR) flat panel displays; fiber optics; and other precision components.
Novec EGC-1702 coating dries to a thin (50-100Å) transparent film with excellent anti-wetting, anti-stiction and anti-migration properties. The solvent component is nonflammable, low in toxicity and provides an acceptable environmental profile for today’s demanding electronic applications. The product contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Novec EGC coatings are easy to apply, require no masking and air-dry in seconds.
