Towers are usually made from tubular steel and are designed to support the nacelle and spinning blades. Low or medium voltage electric cables as well as fiber optic cables run down through the tower to supply the generated electricity to the collection grid and transmit data about system performance.

Windfarms commonly employ a 35 kV electrical collection grid that is made up of 3 medium voltage electrical cables bundled together and buried. These cables connect strings of wind turbines and then carry power back via main feeder cables to the substation. Due to the distances covered by a windfarm, lengths of buried cable must be joined/ spliced to form an uninterrupted electrical collection grid.

An electrical substation for a windfarm takes the medium voltage power from the 35kV underground collection grid and transforms the power to high voltage (138kV, 230kV …) for transmission over long distances. Power cables must be terminated/ connected at both the medium and high-voltage ends of the substation.
