Mexico's CFE Installation

In 2009, a river near the borough of San Vincente on Mexico's Baja California peninsula rose high enough to damage a 115 kV transmission tower located there. Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), which is responsible for managing Mexico's national generation, transmission and distribution system, looked at options for repairing the line.

Their criteria included providing the same capacity as the original line, while maintaining a clearance of 9 meters (27 feet) above the water. Replacing the original tower in the river bed was deemed too expensive, so CFE looked at other options.

In December 2012, they replaced the existing 795 ACSR with a 270-T35 ACCR. This allowed them to meet their needs for clearances, capacity and strength, while saving time and cost.

The ease of installing ACCR was specifically cited. Ing. Alejandro Vellafuerte, an engineer with the installation company, remarked, "The wire is very similar to ACSR in terms of the installation process. So the conditions in terms of tools and equipment don't really cause any problems because they are similar..."
