Smithsonian – Hirshhorn Museum
Coming soon! The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian Institution’s museum of modern and contemporary art, has commissioned internationally renowned artist Barbara Kruger (American, b. Newark, New Jersey, 1945) to create a site-specific installation for one of the museum’s most visited public spaces. Opening July 27, 2012, “Belief+Doubt” (2012) fills the lower level lobby and extends into the newly relocated museum bookstore. The entire space is wrapped in text-and-image-printed 3M Controltac™ Film, covering approximately 6,700 square feet of surface, including walls, floor and escalator sides. Rendered in a high contrast color scheme of red, white and black with lettering up to 12 feet tall, phrases either crafted by the artist or borrowed from the popular lexicon address conflicting perceptions of democracy, power and belief.  3M donated the materials for this project.
