How long have 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals been in existence?

For over 75 years, 3M has been coloring granules for use in asphalt shingle manufacturing, mastering the technology of coloring rock granules, while assuring a durable coating and lasting color. This technology was easily transferred 40 years ago to the coloring of quartz crystals. Its first use was in seamless flooring systems. Pool builders began using Colorquartz Crystals in pool surfaces in 1988. Because of 3M's technology and experience, our Colorquartz Crystals have been the favorite choice of pool builders and architects.

What guarantees that 3M’s color will last?

3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals are formulated with stable inorganic pigments -- the same kind of pigments used to give permanent color to ceramic tile. A proprietary ceramic-coating process is used to permanently bond color pigments to the quartz. The result is bright, consistent, long-lasting color, unaffected by harsh pool chemicals, low pH or sunlight. Tinted plaster, in comparison, provides limited color options and often fades over time.

Does 3M install pools?

No. 3M manufactures and sells Colorquartz Crystals. We have tested our product against chemicals and wear in pools and recommend it as a beneficial ingredient for improved color and durability in pool surfaces.

Does 3M make a complete pool plaster mix?

No. 3M sells 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals only as an ingredient. Plaster mixes are generally a combination of white portland cement and either sand or crushed marble. 3M Colorquartz Crystals are added to plaster mixes, replacing a portion of the mix that is either the sand or soft crushed marble. Even though 3M does not sell a pre-blended plaster mix, companies that buy our crystals and sell a pre-blended mix under their own brand name include:

Can this be a do-it-yourself project?

No. Pool plastering is a job for skilled and experienced professionals.

What does the 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals surface look and feel like?

The colored crystals are randomly distributed throughout the plaster surface, so each pool will have its own unique appearance. The feel is a smooth and pleasant texture but, if desired, can be exposed to have a more "gripping" surface on high-traffic areas, such as steps or pool-side decks.

Where can I find samples of 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals in plaster or see an actual pool?

Please ask your builder or applicator for samples or, better yet, to see an actual pool.

Should my builder/plasterer have experience in applying this product?

Yes. Visit our Where to Buy page to find an experienced pool builder or plasterer in your area.

Will this product affect my pool chemistry?

No. 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals should have no effect on standard pool chemistry. Nor should you worry about the chemistry affecting the color of the quartz granules. They will not chip, crack, fade or bleed color into your plaster surface.

Return to top of FAQ page

Is there any special start-up treatment required?

Yes. To ensure proper start-up and to keep your pool manufacturer's warranty valid, please follow the specific recommendations given to you by your pool contractor.

Who should I call if there are defects in my pool surface?

Please call your pool builder if there are apparent surface defects or stained areas.

At initial installation a thin film of plaster called "cream" or "fat" may be covering the crystals causing a mottled appearance. This is normal, and this layer of cream will be removed as part of the natural curing process. Following the start-up procedure recommended by your builder and brushing the surface of the pool for several days will speed this natural curing process and expose more crystals at the beginning.

Are 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals recommended for use in a spa?

Yes. 3M Colorquartz Crystals are ideally suited for the high temperatures and chemical levels in spas.

Are 3M™ Colorquartz™ Crystals recommended for decks and patios?

Yes. Colorquartz Crystals are an excellent choice for outdoor application as the color will not fade when exposed to sunlight. They can be used in resin coatings to provide a safe and comfortable surface. Your builder can recommend an appropriate level of slip resistance for your application or visit our Where To Buy page to find an experienced applicator in your area.

Can I acid-wash my Colorquartz pool?

Yes. Typically, after 3-4 years, a plaster pool, whether it is plain plaster or a quartz pool, will need routine maintenance and cleaning. The pool is drained and given an acid-wash. Staining is removed as the acid removes that top layer of plaster on the surface. In a pool finished with Colorquartz Crystals, this process actually increases the strength and stain resistance of the surface, as the weaker plaster is removed and more of the Colorquartz Crystals are exposed.
