There are two popular types of orthodontic braces today: ligated and self-ligating.
Ligated braces need ligatures (elastic bands) to hold the archwire in the braces.
These elastic bands add color to the braces, but they can stain and may catch food particles.
Newer self-ligating braces from 3M, like Clarity™ SL and SmartClip™ Braces, do not use elastic bands, but hold the archwire in the bracket in other ways.
