Engineering: Corporate

3M Engineering recruits individuals in four main job areas to help manage the $1-billion-plus plant, property and equipment global capital asset investment budget for the corporation. Project management engineers manage projects from scope definition to commissioning. Equipment design and process engineers deliver proprietary and unique process equipment needed to manufacture 3M products. Process instrumentation and control engineers focus on equipment controls and plant electrical needs. Facilities engineers concentrate on plant and property. All engineers work on cross-functional teams with business, laboratory and manufacturing personnel.

3M has two parallel career paths in the technical organization known as the "dual ladder" system. In addition to a management career path, there is a technical career path. This technical path honors the prestige 3M technical employees have enjoyed during 3M's history. It also allows employees to advance in position and compensation consistent with contributions, all without abandoning what they do best.

Project ManagementDesignProcess Instrumentation & Control SystemsFacilities
  • Work with specific business units and develop equipment solutions for manufacturing and laboratory tasks, managing the project through the installation phase.
  • Plant resident engineers focus on their specific plant's equipment, output improvement options, installations and plant facilities.

Education

B.S./M.S. in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering.

  • Work with laboratory, engineering and manufacturing functions related to engineering mechanics: fluid flow, heat and mass transfer and stress analysis.
  • Use CAD/CAE tools to develop new or improved manufacturing processes and mechanical engineering principles to develop concepts, create detailed designs and oversee equipment fabrication.
  • Use on-line process specialized sensors, data acquisition systems, frequency analysis and statistics to reduce product variability in manufacturing.
  • Provide machine vision solutions for defect detection, process control, process development and measurement and precision assembly.
  • Use process modeling and simulation methodologies to improve operations across all businesses.

Education

Most B.S./M.S./Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering, some Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, Optics or Manufacturing Engineering.

  • The systems engineer's work includes the application of controls to specific equipment projects from identification through equipment commissioning. The engineer applies a variety of control technologies including: AC/DC motion control, digital and analog systems, interactive operator/machine interface, data acquisition, PID and PLC control and systems integration.
  • Resident systems engineers, located at a plant site, perform tasks similar to a systems engineer, with efforts focused on manufacturing operations.

Education

B.S./M.S. in Electrical, Computer Engineering or Computer Science.

  • Manage projects and specialize in technologies related to 3M facilities: manufacturing plants, laboratories, offices, warehouses and customer technical centers.
  • Engineers and architects specialize in: Architectural, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering (includes Fire Protection) Design, Civil, and Structural Engineering Design, Project Estimating and Field Services.

Education

B.S. in Architectural, Civil/Structural, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.

All Positions

  • Assignments are based at 3M corporate headquarters in St. Paul, Minn., or 3M plant locations throughout the United States.
  • Travel to manufacturing and laboratory sites is required and varies from 10 to 25 percent, depending on job position.
  • Candidates should demonstrate excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The interviewers will be looking for leadership qualities necessary for developing project assignments, guiding other employees, and completing independent assignments.
  • Relocation benefits may be available.
