CATEGORY: ABOUT 3M JOB OPENINGS

Question: Where can I find a list of employment opportunities at 3M?

Response: 3M posts current job openings on 3M.com. Visit the "Careers" home page and click use the Start Your Job Search Here feature. You may find it helpful to print our tip sheet for reference as you search and apply for jobs.

Question: I want to learn more about 3M before I apply for a job. Where can I find information on a specific market group or product?

Response: Visit 3m.com. "Our Company" "Products and Services" and "Technologies" are three of the main categories that can provide this information.

Question: What is the hiring process?

Response: View the How do I Apply page

Question: How do I get the contact information of the hiring manager for the job I am interested in?

Response: It is 3M policy not to give contact information to external applicants. If, after you apply, it is determined that your skills and abilities match our hiring needs, you will be contacted directly for an interview.

Question: I'm interested in an intern position with 3M. How can I apply?

Response: 3M selects interns through continuous on campus interaction with the colleges and universities at which we recruit. Please check with your university career services office to determine 3M's activities at your university. At this time, only interns from these selected universities are accepted .

Question: I'm interested in a specific job at 3M, but how can I determine the salary range of the position?

Response: You would discuss the specifics of the salary for each position with the Human Resources representative or hiring manager. Our compensation and benefits plans are based on national benchmarking studies to ensure that they are competitive. Our salaries are based on the market value of the position and take into consideration an applicant's experience and education.

CATEGORY: APPLYING FOR 3M JOBS OUTSIDE THE U.S.

Question: How do I know if I am eligible to apply for 3M jobs in other countries?

Response: From the "Careers" home page, click "Search Globally" and select the country in which you are interested. The job postings on that country site will specify applicant requirements. Please note that when applying for a job outside of your home country that your application is governed by that country's legal requirements.

Question: If I am hired at 3M, are there opportunities for me to work in other countries on assignment?

Response: Yes. 3M has Foreign Service Assignments (FSAs) for employees who are both qualified to fulfill assignment requirements and who are interested in the opportunity. If you are hired at 3M, you are encouraged to let your supervisor or Human Resources Manager know that you're interested in this kind of opportunity.

Question: Are the countries listed on the Open Global Positions page the only countries that have current employment opportunities?

Response: No. These are, however, the only countries that are currently available in our system to post global positions. If you are interested in applying in a country that we do not have listed, please choose the country from the drop down list on top of our Careers page. You can contact the subsidiary directly to ask about open positions.

CATEGORY: GETTING NOTIFIED ABOUT JOB OPENINGS

Question: How can I learn when new job opportunities become available?

Response: You can review current opportunities on our Job Search page, and by using "My Account Options", you can request to be notified via e-mail about opportunities that match your defined profile criteria.

Question: How do I create or update my Career Profile?

Response: Click Access My Profile to create or modify your Career Profile. The Career Profile captures your areas of interest, education, and salary expectations. By creating a Career Profile, your resume/CV and job preferences will be entered into our extensive proprietary talent database and be available to our recruiters.

When establishing your Career Profile, you may select to receive e-mail notifications of new opportunities. To do this, click on My Account Options and check the appropriate box within the Correspondence section. If you select to receive notifications, you will receive an e-mail whenever new opportunities become available that match the interests and preferences in your Career Profile. In each notification, a link will be provided to take you to the specific job posting, where you will have the opportunity to apply.

After completing your Career Profile, you will receive an e-mail stating that your Career Profile was received.

Question: How much time do I have to respond to a notification I receive about an opportunity?

Response: Posting periods vary and depend on a number of factors, including the type or location of a position and/or the hiring manager’s timeframe to fill it. Because of the high volume of candidates who typically apply to posted positions, we recommend you respond quickly if you have an interest in a position.

Question: I completed my Career Profile and subscribed to automatic notifications. When will I be notified about opportunities?

Response: You will be notified about new opportunities within 24 hours of when they are posted on our career site, as long as they reflect the interests and preferences you indicated in your Career Profile. If you did not subscribe to automatic notifications and you wish to activate this feature, log in and click on My Account Options link at the top of the page. Then check the appropriate box within the Correspondence section. If you elect not to receive notifications, you will then need to manually visit our Careers Web site to view new opportunities.

Question: Why should I take the time to fill out a profile, when I can attach my resume?

Response: Our online application process streamlines your candidate experience and will make your skills and qualifications more readily searchable to multiple recruiters within 3M. We believe our online application process will save you time by allowing you to easily update your personal and employment information, as well as applying your profile information to multiple positions. Our online application process allows you to:

  • Create a personal profile, including your contact information, skills and qualifications and electronic resume
  • Search and apply for available positions
  • Update your profile information as needed
  • Request to be notified via e-mail of new employment opportunities that match specific criteria you define in your profile

Question: I do not want to be considered for opportunities at this time. How can my information be removed from the database?

Response: Tell us in an e-mail by logging in and clicking on the "My Account Options" link at the top of the page. Under the "To withdraw your candidate profile" section on the right side of the page, click the "click here" link. In the subject line of the message, specify "Removal of Resume/CV". In the body of the e-mail, provide your full name and the User Name under which your Career Profile is registered. Please note: When you withdraw your candidate profile, any active applications will also be withdrawn and you will receive no further communications from the 3M Career site. Also, if you have profiles set up under multiple User Names, you must list all the User Names to have all profiles removed.

You will receive an e-mail to confirm that your resume/CV and contact information have been removed from our database.

CATEGORY: APPLYING FOR A JOB

Question: Can I drop off my resume at a 3M location, mail it, or fax it to you?

Response: No, all applicants for non-production positions must submit an application on-line.

Question: How do I know that 3M received my resume? Should I call or e-mail to confirm?

Response: You do not need to call or e-mail us to confirm that we received your application. You will be notified via e-mail that your resume was successfully submitted after you click the "Submit" button at the end of the application process.

CATEGORY: ONLINE APPLICATION HELP

Question: My membership/license or certificate/major/university is not listed in the look-up tables. What should I do?

Response: If you do not see the appropriate value in the look up just type in your information into this field. The system will track the information for you and let you continue through the application/profile process.

Question: What should I do if I experience errors while attempting to apply on your site?

Response: If you are not able to troubleshoot the error after reading the FAQs, please send an e-mail to GWN Support at: gwnsupport@mmm.com. You will then be assisted with your application.

CATEGORY: AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR RESUME

Question: How can I check the status of my application?

Response: From the 3M.com Careers home page, sign in as a returning applicant and click "View Application Status." It is not necessary to contact 3M. If your skills and abilities match our hiring needs, you will be contacted directly for an interview.

Question: How do I change my contact information or resume once I have submitted it?

Response: Once you have created a profile, you may change your personal information or update your resume as needed. Simply click on Access My Profile, accept the Privacy statement, enter your user id/password and make the necessary changes. Your information will be updated immediately.

CATEGORY: TECHNICAL ISSUES & SUPPORT

Question: I am having trouble logging in to the site. What should I do?

Response: Send an e-mail to GWN Support at: gwnsupport@mmm.com with your name and the e-mail address you have been using at the site.

Question: I forgot my password. How do I log in to your site?

Response: From the Applicant Home page, scroll down to the bottom and enter your e-mail address in the appropriate field. Click on "I Forgot My Password." You will be e-mailed a new password to log in to the site.

Question: If I leave my computer before completing an application, will my session time out?

Response: For security purposes, our system will automatically time out after 30 minutes of inactivity. We do not have a "save for later" function that allows you to pick up where you left off in the application process. Your information will save only after you successfully submit a resume to our site either for general consideration or for a specific job opportunity.
