Overview

Our 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Instant Adhesive CA5 is a high-strength, slow setting cyanoacrylate adhesive that cures at room temperature. Its relatively high viscosity is especially useful where some gap filling is desired for bonding rough or uneven surfaces. The longer set rate gives users ample time to make adjustments and ensure proper alignment of parts before the bond forms. Additionally this product meets military standard CID A-A-3097, Type II, Class 3.

Recommended Applications

  • Gap filling
  • Industrial
  • Rubber, foam and glass bonding
  • Instant bonding

Easy Application

Like many of our instant adhesives, the 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Instant Adhesive CA5 is simple to apply. The clear liquid is easily and precisely applied from the bottle – no additional tools necessary. After application, the set time is a bit slower, allowing parts to be properly aligned within the 60 second time limit. After parts are properly aligned, the full cure is achieved in 24 hours, at 72°F (22°C).

What are Instant Adhesives?
Instant adhesives are Cyanoacrylate based formulas that are strong, fast-acting adhesives used in industrial, and household applications. In general, they are an acrylic resin that rapidly polymerizes in the presence of water (specifically hydroxide ions), forming long, strong chains, joining the bonded surfaces together. Cyanoacrylates typically have a short shelf life and may have some minor toxicity. As a liquid, cyanoacrylate consists of monomers of cyanoacrylate molecules. Depending on the intended application or to facilitate easy handling, a cyanoacrylate adhesive may be formulated with an ingredient such as fumed silica to make it more viscous or gel-like.

The presence of moisture causes the glue to set meaning exposure to normal levels of humidity in the air causes a thin skin to form within seconds, which greatly slows the reactive curing process; because of this process, cyanoacrylate should be applied thinly to ensure that the reaction proceeds rapidly and a strong bond is formed within a reasonable time. Our instant adhesives apply right from the container and rapidly reach handling strength at room temperature. A single drop per square inch can bond many plastics, rubber, metal and more.

Superior Aesthetic Quality
Unlike mechanical fastening methods, our instant adhesive doesn’t damage the appearance of finished projects because there is no need to drill holes – creating an aesthetically superior look that eliminates the need for unsightly bolts, screws, rivets and fasteners. The 2,500 pound-force per square inch shear strength makes this product ideal for use in a number of industries, including: transportation, specialty vehicle, metalworking, construction, military and government, general industrial, MRO, electronics and consumer goods.
