3M™ Scotch-Weld™ General Purpose Retaining Compound RT09 is our general-purpose, low viscosity retaining compound that prevents spin-out for rigid assemblies such as locking bushings and sleeves in housings or on shafts, bonding rotors to shafts, and as an augment to press fits.
Provides retention for components with tight tolerances
Low viscosity flows into minute gaps less than 5 mil
Easy-to-dispense formula can replace keys, splines and set screws
We designed 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ General Purpose Retaining Compound RT09 as a one-component anaerobic adhesive to secure cylindrical metal assemblies such as bearings on shafts, bushings, sleeves, housings, and keyways. The formula requires no mixing or additives and takes the guesswork out of use. It works within various assemblies to fill minute gaps less than 5 mil and to prevent loosening, corrosion and leakage caused by shock and vibration.
Add Retaining Compound to Save
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ General Purpose Retaining Compound RT09 bonds and seals non-threaded cylindrical metal assemblies, such as press-fit or slip-fit parts. Our medium strength, removable formula flows in between components with tight tolerances and can replace small retention components such as keys, splines and set screws. Replacing these components can save on overall weight and component costs and simplify assembly and maintenance. It is ideal for components that will not require disassembly and that operate at low temperatures, from -65°F to 300°F (-54°C to 149°C ) with a gap fill requirement of less than 5 mil.
Our family of 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Retaining Compounds are special adhesives designed to effectively secure brushings, bearings, cylindrical parts and gears onto housings or shafts. Our retaining compounds also help increase the reliability of the joint. These anaerobic adhesives cure within 24 hours to help make a strong, lasting, precision assembly. They help create uniform stress distribution and maximum load transmission capability.
What Are Anaerobic Adhesives?
Anaerobic adhesives are uniquely formulated to cure in the absence of oxygen. The term "anaerobic" means "living without air" and when the oxygen is excluded, a chemical chain reaction begins that causes the adhesive to polymerize. Contact with metal speeds the polymerization process and rapidly accelerates the curing process, forming tough cross-linked plastic that provides aggressive adhesion with effective shear strength. More commonly referred to as threadlockers, thread sealants, retaining compounds and flange sealants, these adhesives are often used to enhance the seal, or holding force, in the threads of joined fastener systems such as nut-and-bolt assemblies. A nut-and-bolt assembly may have as little as 15 percent metal-to-metal contact and even a small amount of anaerobic adhesive readily fills any air voids between the threads and then hardens to a thermoset plastic. These unique, high-viscosity adhesives are easy to dispense, cure rapidly, and provide effective torque strength while resisting temperature and vibration and sealing out moisture and gasses to protect against corrosion. Anaerobic adhesives can decrease manufacturing costs, enhance equipment reliability, minimize aftermarket breakdown, and reduce warranty claims.
