3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP920

3M Product Number  DP920
3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP920 Off-White is a two-part, room-temperature curing epoxy adhesive, specially formulated to bond oily metals and other surfaces. At 3M, we have pioneered the bonding of surfaces which have been regarded as ‘hard-to-bond’, including oily metal and low surface energy (LSE) plastics.
  • Bonds with minimal surface prep
  • Provides high shear, peel, impact, vibration and fatigue resistance
  • Mixes as it dispenses for minimal material waste and maximum work-life
  • Medium viscosity, no-sag formula provides easy, precise dispensing
  • Effective system for joining, gluing, adhering, attaching, repairing, potting, panel bonding, adhering, and hard disc drive component assembly

Overview

The mix ratio is 2:1 and its 20 minute work life gives you ample time to adjust for proper fit prior to curing. It starts as a medium viscosity liquid for easy, controlled application where you need it and won't sag when dispensed overhead. The adhesive reaches handling strength in approximately 3 hours and is fully cured in 48 hours. For best results, always use 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX™ Plus II Applicator and Mixing Nozzles, sold separately. Both mixing nozzle and applicator are required for dispensing from the Duo-Pak cartridge.

Epoxy adhesives are part of the class of adhesives called "structural adhesives," which also includes polyurethane, acrylic, cyanoacrylate, and others. Epoxies begin as liquid reactive polymers that undergo a chemical chain reaction when mixed, and then cure to form a solid plastic material. Once the two parts are mixed in their specified ratio, they begin the curing process and offer a limited working time where the adhesive can be applied and the two surfaces positioned as need. This "work life" lasts anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours or longer. This class of structural adhesives provides high shear and peel strengths, depending on the formula and better heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. Epoxies that are heat cured are more heat and chemical resistant than those that cure at room temperature.  Epoxy adhesives are widely used in building and home construction, aircraft and automobile manufacture, bicycle, boat, golf clubs, ski, and snowboard assembly and a host of home use and other applications; virtually anywhere high-strength bonds are needed along with resistance to environmental conditions. These adhesives are popular for their ease of use, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Formulations can be created to make epoxies that are flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, quick setting or slow setting. The versatility with which epoxy adhesives can be formulated helps meet almost any requirement for bonding wood, metal, glass, stone, and various plastics.

Industrial uses for epoxies range widely and include coatings, adhesives, and composite materials like carbon fiber and glass-reinforced plastic. They are the preferred choice for their ability to flow and conform to the work area, strong adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, and exceptional mechanical and electrical insulating properties.
