3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Epoxy Adhesive DP420 Black is a toughened, two-part epoxy adhesive that gives you the strength needed along with high impact and vibration resistance to help meet the most demanding bonding challenges. This adhesive cures at room-temperature, making it a convenient and easy-to-use solution for tough end-use applications.
Toughened for impact and vibration resistance
Moderate work-life provides ample time for positioning and adjustment for fit
Adhesive meters and mixes as it dispenses, for maximum work-life
Medium viscosity, self-leveling formula provides easy, precise dispensing
Effective adhesive for joining, gluing, adhering, attaching, repairing, potting, panel bonding, adhering, and structural bonding
It maintains bond strength at high and low temperatures and can withstand paint bake operations up to 4000 F for 30 minutes. In many applications, you can use DP420 in place of mechanical fasteners, screws, rivets, spot welds, and is excellent for indoor bonding on a variety of substrates such as metals, ceramics, wood, many plastics, and glass. Our adhesive meets the requirements for UL 94 HB.
DP420 Black dispenses as a medium viscosity adhesive for easy, controlled dispensing then dries to a black color. The adhesive reaches handling strength in approximately 2 hours and is fully cured in 24 hours (at 720F/220C). The mix ratio is 2:1 and provides a 20 minute work life, providing ample time to adjust for desired fit prior to curing. For best results, always use 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX™ Plus II Applicator and Mixing Nozzles, sold separately. Both mixing nozzle and applicator are required for dispensing from the Duo-Pak cartridge.
Epoxy adhesives are part of the class of adhesives called "structural adhesives," which also includes polyurethane, acrylic, cyanoacrylate, and others. Epoxies begin as liquid reactive polymers that undergo a chemical chain reaction when mixed, and then cure to form a solid plastic material. Once the two parts are mixed in their specified ratio, they begin the curing process and offer a limited working time where the adhesive can be applied and the two surfaces positioned as need. This "work life" lasts anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours or longer. This class of structural adhesives provides high shear and peel strengths, depending on the formula and better heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. Epoxies that are heat cured are more heat and chemical resistant than those that cure at room temperature. Epoxy adhesives are widely used in building and home construction, aircraft and automobile manufacture, bicycle, boat, golf clubs, ski, and snowboard assembly and a host of home use and other applications; virtually anywhere high-strength bonds are needed along with resistance to environmental conditions. These adhesives are popular for their ease of use, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance. Formulations can be created to make epoxies that are flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque, quick setting or slow setting. The versatility with which epoxy adhesives can be formulated helps meet almost any requirement for bonding wood, metal, glass, stone, and various plastics.
Industrial uses for epoxies range widely and include coatings, adhesives, and composite materials like carbon fiber and glass-reinforced plastic. They are the preferred choice for their ability to flow and conform to the work area, strong adhesion, chemical and heat resistance, and exceptional mechanical and electrical insulating properties.
