Masking off areas not to be coated when powder coating bus bars, cabinets, metal furniture, light fixtures, etc. Typically this tape is applied by hand.
Key Application Requirements
Short-term, high-temperature (400°F, 204°C) backing and adhesive that comes off easily and does not transfer.
Tape is applied to mask off areas where the powder coating is not wanted. Tape needs to be rubbed down and pushed fully into inside corners. Die-cut parts can be made by the customer or by 3M per the customer’s specification. Powder coatings are paint films applied as dry powders, which are applied via a process of electrical attraction and then melted in an oven to form a solid film.
Performance: Provides a sharp paint edge for most thermoset powder coat resin types.
Easy handling and application: The 2 mil thickness of 3M™ Polyester Tape 8992 gives good strength and slightly higher-temperature performance.
Silicone adhesive: The tape removes after bakeout powder cure.
Polyester backing: Provides high-temperature masking of parts up to 400° F (204° C) for short periods of time.
