Our History

1983 – 3M Health Information Systems was created when the 3M Company of St. Paul, Minn., acquired Code3 Corporation, a small, innovative Salt Lake City, Utah-based company that was quickly becoming a leader in coding and classification systems. Today, the highly evolved "descendant" of Code3's product is better known as the 3M™ Coding and Reimbursement System − used by more than 5,000 hospitals.

1987 – 3M Health Information Systems acquired Medlab Company of Salt Lake City. Using its HELP™ Patient Care System, 3M formed the foundation for today's Health Information Exchange software products for the electronic health record.

1990 – 3M Health Information Systems acquired Health Systems International (HSI), a New Haven, Conn., company and contractor to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The extensive knowledge from HSI’s Clinical Research Department provided invaluable experience in creating and revising coding methodologies, including the development of the 3M™ APR DRG Classification System, the industry standard methodology for quality of care comparisons based on severity of illness and risk of mortality. The group also assisted CMS in finalizing Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs), the basis for the Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS), and developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System under contract to CMS.

1996 – With the acquisition of the healthcare consulting group Solon of Silver Spring, Maryland, 3M Health Information Systems began offering expert consulting services along with its software solutions.

1999 − 3M Health Information Systems acquired Atlanta-based HIOB (Hyatt, Imler, Ott and Blount), adding the national reputation and vast experience to the company’s existing consulting service.

2000 − 3M Home Health Systems became part of the company, with a product line that featured a comprehensive, practice management system that integrated clinical and financial patient data to optimize the effectiveness of home healthcare agencies. 3M Health Information Systems sold its Home Health business to Procura in 2007.

2004 − The company acquired Info-X, a New Jersey-based provider of medical coding compliance software and data for effective management of hospital billing and compliance issues.

2006 − 3M Health Information Systems merged with SoftMed Systems of Silver Spring, Maryland, creating a new organization that provides integrated core functionality for the collection, automation, and analysis of electronic clinical data.
