HHS establishes October 1, 2013 for ICD-10 implementation date
On January 15, 2009, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a final rule establishing ICD-10 as the new national coding standard. The implementation date, initially proposed for October 2011, has been set for October 1, 2013. Experts say that the adoption of the new ICD-10 code sets:
- Allows more accurate definition of services and provides specific diagnosis and treatment information for a wider variety of illnesses and diseases
- Provides more accurate data for tracking, reporting, reimbursement, trending and purchasing decisions
- Reduces claim rejection, improves disease management and allows for more accurate and comprehensive revenue recognition
