No.16 MEGUIAR’S FORD FUSION RECAP:

Perseverance Leads to12th-Place Finish at Bristol for Biffle

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 16, 2014) — Despite all the obstacles thrown their way, Greg Biffle and his No. 16 team persevered at Bristol.  On Friday an accident in practice caused the team to bring out the backup Meguiar’s Ford, but the team pulled together and was able to qualify eighth.  Corded left front tires early in the race left Biffle thinking he had a loose wheel, leading him to focus on tire wear.  After being awarded the “lucky dog” twice in the race, Biffle earned a 12th-place lead lap finish in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The No. 16 team started off practice at Bristol with a fast Meguiar’s Ford, but while trying a high line Biffle brushed the outside wall of turn four then the inside of the front stretch when he lost control.  The team was able to get the backup car on the track for a few laps before qualifying.  Their hard work was repaid with an eight-place qualifying effort.

The Food City 500 started later than planned due to rain in the area and once the cars hit the track Biffle knew he had his hands full.  He quickly dropped from his eighth-place starting position to 30th by the time the competition caution flag waved on lap 50.  His Ford was handling so badly, he was convinced he had a loose wheel.  A pit stop for four tires proved that wasn’t the case, but cords on the left front tire made the team aware that tire conservation would be their focus.

The vibration continued and when the rain returned a little over 100 laps into the race, Biffle was one lap down to the leaders.  Over three hours later the track was dry and Biffle was on the hunt to get his lap back.  He did just that when the caution came out on lap 155.

Over a long green flag run Biffle was passed by the leader just as the caution came out, setting himself up for the “lucky dog” award for the second time.  With a little over 200 laps remaining, Biffle was 15th and had a car with good balance that only needed minor adjustments.  The team took every opportunity to pit for fresh tires as the laps dwindled down.  Biffle’s determination paid off with a 12th-place finish at Bristol in his Meguiar’s Ford Fusion.

Biffle’s Roush Fenway teammates took the top two spots Sunday evening at Bristol.  Carl Edwards took home the win, while Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished second.  Aric Almirola, Tony Stewart and Marcos Ambrose rounded out the top five.  Next up the Sprint Cup Series heads back out west to Auto Club Speedway for 500 laps.  Coverage of the Auto Club 400 begins at 3:00 PM ET on FOX.
