No. 16 3M FAN APPRECIATION FORD FUSION:

Pit Road Gamble Falls Short for Biffle in Homestead

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (November 17, 2013) – Greg Biffle came up one pit stop short in the season finale Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.  The team gambled by saving their last set of sticker tires for a caution that never came in the closing laps.  Biffle crossed the finish line 24th and finished up the season ninth in the Championship standings.

Biffle started 16th in his 3M Fan Appreciation Ford and by the first caution, just 11 laps in, he was up to 11th.  Just as Biffle made it into the top 10, a costly pit stop set him back in traffic.  The car behind pitted towards the front of their pit box, while Biffle had stopped a little short in his.  The rear tire carrier and changer got hung up during the stop, setting Biffle up 19th for the restart.

Biffle was a little free to start the race, but his rear grip faded being back in traffic as the sun set over the track.  Fresh tires seemed to make up the most ground and whenever the opportunity to pit arose, the team took advantage.

What would be the final caution of the day came out with a little over 30 laps remaining in the race.  Biffle and his team decided to gamble taking a set of scuffed tires on the stop, saving a sticker set for a later caution.  On the restart Biffle lost ground to those on sticker tires and the much needed final caution the team gambled on never came.  When the checkered flag waved Biffle was 24th, finishing up the 2013 season ninth in the Championship point standings.

Jimmie Johnson claimed his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship, while Denny Hamlin won the Ford EcoBoost 400.  There are just 98 days before the 2014 season kicks off with the Daytona 500.
