No.16 3M FORD FUSION RECAP:

Biffle Drives Pink 3M Ford to a 9th-Place Finish at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 27, 2013) – With a pink 3M Ford in honor of October being breast cancer awareness month, Greg Biffle tackled a caution-filled 500 laps at Martinsville Speedway to earn a ninth-place finish. The wear-and-tear of short track racing took a toll on the bumper cover of the 3M Ford, forcing Biffle to pit road for unscheduled repairs. With a little over 100 laps remaining, Biffle rebounded from 27th to cross the finish line ninth. “We had a great 3M Ford Fusion,” said Biffle. “It was a good day for us. I just wish that wouldn’t have happened (the rear bumper flapping forcing him to pit road). We had a top-five car here today, finally to get in the top-five at Martinsville, but that’s like our fourth or fifth top-10 in a row so I’m pretty happy.”

The 3M team had their hands full right from the start at Martinsville. Biffle qualified a disappointing 33rd and spun twice on the track during practice on Saturday. Luckily there was no contact during each spin in practice and the team was able to get the handling heading in the right direction heading into Sunday’s race.

Biffle’s 3M Ford started off the race a little tight, but wedge and track bar adjustments were all he needed to maneuver his way around the short track. There were 17 cautions throughout the race and on each restart the bottom row was the preferred line, as the top had no grip. Biffle found himself in the outside line for a majority of the restarts.

The beating and banging of 43 cars on the ½-mile track led to the bumper cover of the No. 16 flapping behind Biffle. The team attempted to repair the damage with bear bond during the race, but ultimately the cover came loose again.

Under caution on lap 382 NASCAR black-flagged Biffle, forcing him to come in from seventh position to have the cover removed. Biffle restarted the race 27th with just over 100 laps remaining. Proving he had a fast Ford, Biffle pitted under the next caution for tires, then charged through the field earning a ninth-place finish.

Jeff Gordon won Sunday afternoon at Martinsville, while Matt Kenseth, Clint Bowyer, Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top five. With three races remaining in the Chase, the Sprint Cup Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway.
