No. 16 SCOTCH BLUE FORD FUSION RECAP:
Biffle Drives No. 16 Scotch Blue Ford to an 11th-Place Finish
TALLADEGA, Ala. (October 20, 2013) – Restrictor-plate racing at Talladega Superspeedway historically is a wild card race due to fast speeds and pack racing. Biffle emerged unscathed as the biggest wreck of the day unfolded coming to the checkered flag. Biffle started sixth in his No. 16 Scotch Blue Ford and led two different times throughout the 188-lap race, for a total of five laps, culminating in an 11th-place finish.
“We made it through, that is half the battle at this place,” said Biffle after the race. “It was typical Talladega, we were up and then in the back and up and then in the back. At the end of the day, we missed the wreck and that is all I really care about.”
Qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway was rained out Saturday, leaving NASCAR to set the starting lineup based on first practice speeds from Friday, starting Biffle sixth in his Scotch Blue Ford Fusion.
In true restrictor plate racing fashion, Biffle started sixth, by lap eight was back in 19th, just to be shuffled up to the lead by lap 15. On the first pit stop crew chief Matt Puccia called for four tires, fuel and a left-rear wedge adjustment, as Biffle mentioned he was a little bit tight.
The second pit stop of the day was for four tires, fuel and a right-rear wedge adjustment. Biffle restarted seventh on lap 85, but got shuffled back as the field got a little dicey. In an effort to avoid any on-track accidents, Biffle continued to ride in the back, knowing with his fast Ford he could make a move back to the front.
A two-tire stop and fuel was the last round of service for Biffle, and thanks to a fast stop by the 3M Pit Bulls, Biffle was up to second. As the race wound down Biffle found himself just outside the top 10. The field remained single file, while everyone was waiting for someone to make the first move.
On the last lap the No. 14 of Austin Dillon wound up upside down as the field was heading towards the checkered flag. Biffle avoided the incident to cross the finish line 11th, dropping one position to seventh in the Championship standings.
Jamie McMurray went unchallenged for the lead and took home the victory at Talladega. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Paul Menard and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. Next up for the Sprint Cup Series is short-track racing from Martinsville Speedway.
