Biffle Finishes 16th in No. 16 / 811 Ford at the Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.(August 11, 2013) – With 811 “Call before you dig” on his 3M Ford, Greg Biffle was looking for a solid points run at the 2.45-mile road course that makes up Watkins Glen.  After qualifying 17th, Biffle had his hands full all day with traffic but had a fast Ford.  A poorly timed caution while pitting cost the team valuable track position, but Biffle was able to avoid the caution filled closing laps to finish 16th.  The finish moved Biffle up to ninth in the point standings.

Rain for the second week in a row cut into practice on Friday, but luckily with enough summer daylight they were able to get practice in that evening.  On Saturday Biffle qualified his No. 16 3M / 811 Ford 17th for 90-laps of road course racing action.

Road courses are notoriously hard to pass at and Watkins Glen proved the same, but Biffle was able to work his way up to 15th when the first caution came out 14 laps into the race.  With pit strategy in mind Biffle stayed out and didn’t come in for service until lap 30 when he received four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment.

A multicar accident on lap 41 led NASCAR to throw the red flag since extensive cleanup was required.  The field went back to green over 20 minutes later on lap 42.  Biffle was scheduled to come in for service on lap 60, but just as he had pit road in sight the caution came out.  Biffle came down pit road for service, but pit road was closed due to the caution.  The penalty was to start at the tail end of the longest line, so with nothing to lose Biffle came back in to top off on fuel.

With nine laps to go, Biffle restarted 20th due to the pit road penalty.  One lap later another caution came when some of the front-runners collided.  The field took the final green flag with two laps to go.  Biffle held on to cross the finish line 16th, moving up to ninth in the point standings.

Kyle Busch held off a hard charging Brad Keselowski to take home the win Sunday afternoon at the Glen.  Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top five.  Next weekend Biffle will look to defend his back-to-back Michigan wins.
