No.16 3M / GIVE KIDS A SMILE FORD FUSION RECAP:
Biffle Earns 1,000th NASCAR Win for Ford at Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 16, 2013) – Greg Biffle continued his dominating way at Michigan International Raceway, earning his fifth win at the two-mile track while also earning Ford’s 1,000th NASCAR win. Biffle started 19th in his 3M / Give Kids a Smile Ford and led 48 laps before claiming the historical win for Ford. The win bumped Biffle up to eighth in the Sprint Cup point standings.
“Yeah, it's definitely a special day,” said Biffle. “It was Father's Day, my first, Emma's first victory lane today, so that was pretty special for me. You know, we certainly didn't probably have the fastest car today at times and kept working on it, kept making slight adjustments on pit stops, and you know, track position is huge with our car, and it's been well documented that we feel like we've been a little bit behind this season. We've been gaining on it. I am just super excited for Ford. It’s the 1,000th win for them, and we got to go drive a bunch of their cars and trucks over at the proving grounds this week, see some of the great 2014 and 2015 stuff coming to market. It's really exciting to see all that and all the racing heritage, and to be able to be a part of that with the 1,000th win, I think I contributed over 50 of those, which is a small number compared to1,000, but still sure excited to be the number 1,000.”
Michigan is the home track for Ford and Roush Industries, which always means a lot of added support for the Roush Fenway teams. Biffle returned to Michigan as the defending winner from the fall but in qualifying on Friday he only posted the 19th fastest lap, while his teammate Carl Edwards claimed the pole. Biffle was quick to point out that he has never won at Michigan starting any better than 13th, a prediction which proved true in the end.
The No. 16 3M / Give Kids a Smile Ford was not the best-handling car in traffic, but Biffle was able to hang in the top 15 for the first half of the race. As the race continued, the handling on his Ford came around and the 3M Pit Bulls only had to make slight chassis adjustments throughout the race.
Tire wear was not a factor in the race; crew chief Matt Puccia only made one four-tire pit stop on lap 77, all the other stops were either right-side tires or no tires. On lap 151, Biffle took over the lead and there was no looking back from there.
While leading the race, Biffle made his final green flag pit stop on lap 166 for two-tires and fuel. While on pit road, the caution came out but the timing fell to his favor and he cycled back through as the leader. Biffle led the race the rest of the way, taking home the checkered flag in Michigan.
Jimmie Johnson seemed to have the car to beat, but Johnson brushed the wall in his efforts to track down Biffle, causing a flat tire for himself. With clean air and the lead, Biffle cruised to his 19th Sprint Cup career victory. The Sprint Cup Series heads out west to Sonoma for some road course racing action. Tune into TNT Sunday, June 23 at 3:00pm ET to watch the Sprint Cup cars tackle the first road course of the season.
