Biffle Finishes 15th in Filtrete Ford in the Sprint All-Star Race

CONCORD, N.C. (May 18th, 2013) – With no points on the line and a million dollars up for grab, the Sprint All-Star race is one of the more exciting events of the season.  With a fast pit-stop by his crew, Biffle earned a third-place starting position in his Filtrete Ford.  Contact with another car on a green-flag run during the race caused Biffle’s left-rear tire to go down, forcing him to pit-road and bringing out the caution.  Despite the unfortunate luck, Biffle was able to be the “lucky dog” and be back on the lead lap for the final 10 lap segment resulting in a 15th-place finish.

Qualifying for the Sprint All-Star race is unlike any other race on the circuit.  A pit-stop is incorporated into the normal two lap qualifying effort, and this time around there was no pit-road speed limit.  Biffle took advantage of not having a speed limit and earned a third-place starting position with his Filtrete Ford.

The 90-lap Sprint All-Star race is split up into four 20-lap segments, followed up by a 10 lap shootout to the finish.  Just eight laps into the race, the rain came bringing out the red flag.  Biffle had dropped back to fifth in the opening laps with a tight-handling Ford, so under the red flag the team looked over the Filtrete Ford and decided on a four tire change.  Just over 41 minutes later the track was dry and racing resumed.

Handling continued to elude the team, as it seemed the car did something different every lap. On lap 65, Biffle’s left-rear tire went down after contact with another car forcing him to pit-road for repairs.  The caution came out from debris off the Filtrete Ford, trapping Biffle one lap down.  Luckily a few short laps later the segment was over and Biffle was back on the lead lap for the final 10 laps.

The field was lined up for the final segment based on their individual average finish in the previous segments.  With this method Biffle took the final green flap 16th and was able to gain one spot to cross the finish line 15th.

Jimmie Johnson won the All-Star race, taking home the million dollar jackpot.  Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five.  Next up is the Coca-Cola 600 Sunday, May 26th.  Pre-race coverage beings at 5:30pm on FOX.
