No.16 3M FORD FUSION RECAP:

Biffle takes Top-10 Finish in Matinsville

MARTINSVILLE, VA., Nev. (April 7th, 2013) — Perseverance was the key to a top-10 finish in Martinsville for Greg Biffle and the 3M team.  After starting 22nd and racing just inside the top 20 for most of the race, the team continued to make adjustments and Biffle continued to drive the 3M Ford to the limit.  The result was a ninth-place finish, Biffle’s second-best finish ever at the Virginia short-track.  He is now sixth in the Sprint Cup point standings.

“Our car was way too tight and we had to keep working on it,” said Biffle.  “We made an adjustment with the track bar to try and turn better, but it didn’t work out for me.  It was a pretty hard-fought day.  I’m pretty happy about a top-10.”

Biffle took the green flag from the outside of the 11th row.  Starting and restarting on the outside line would plague him for the majority of the race.  He was able to drive up into the top 15 early in the race but fell back and eventually went a lap down with an ill-handling racecar.

Just before halfway, Biffle was able to get his lap back by being in the “Lucky Dog” position and began to fight his way back into the top 20.  Biffle was running 14th when Kurt Busch made contact with the outside wall and the front end of his car burst into flames.  The incident brought out a brief red flag with only 13 laps remaining. When racing resumed, Biffle restarted eighth and was able to hold on for ninth when the checkered flag dropped.

“We were going to be better than that, but we’re just not living right,” said Biffle.  “If you look at all of the restarts today, we started on the bottom only twice.  That’s where all of our track position went.  We drove to 10th and would start on the outside and then get back in line 16th or 17th.  We did that a lot, where we had to restart on the outside and that just killed us.  There was no outside groove whatsoever and that really hurt on the restarts.  Everybody really wanted the bottom, but we still finished in the top-10, so I’m pretty happy about that.”

Jimmie Johnson took the win and the points lead with his victory in the STP Gas Booster 500.  Clint Bowyer finished second followed by Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch.  The Sprint Cup Series heads to the heart of Texas next weekend for a Saturday night showdown at the 1.5-mile oval where Biffle is the defending race winner.
