Biffle Finishes 11th at Bristol; Moves up to 5th in Points

BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 17, 2013) —Greg Biffle made short-track racing at Bristol Motor Speedway look easy as he worked his way from 28th after pitting for damage all the way up inside the top five.  The 3M Ford was one of the fastest cars on a long green flag run, but as the race played out with multiple cautions and different pit strategies Biffle lost some ground on the track.  Biffle crossed the finish line 11th and moved up to fifth in the point standings.

“It was really a great day for us because we needed that,” said Biffle after the race.  “At one point we had the fastest car, but we were just a sitting duck because we didn’t take tires, and I put rights on and I was terrible.  So I think we learned something.  We’ll be back for the fall race.”

Biffle had a fast 3M Ford, but missed his marks on his qualifying attempt forcing him to settle for a 24th-place starting position.  The second caution flag flew just past 50 laps into the 500-lap race and Biffle radioed his team he was “really good.”  Crew chief Matt Puccia called him down pit road for four tires, fuel and no adjustments.

After working his way up to 13th, the No. 1 car of Jamie McMurray spun on the track in front of the No. 16 machine. Biffle suffered a little right-side damage while trying to avoid the accident.

With over 400 laps remaining Biffle pitted for right-side tires and to repair the damage on the 3M Ford.  He restarted 28th and one-by-one maneuvered his way to the front of the field.  As the race progressed, the 3M Ford started to develop a tight handling condition.  After a few pit stops with no chassis adjustments, Puccia called for air pressure and wedge adjustments.

With 10 different cautions throughout the race, the field took different pit strategies.  A two-tire stop gained track position, but affected the handling for Biffle.  When the checkered flag flew Biffle crossed the finish line 11th in his 3M Ford Fusion.

Kasey Kahne won the Food City 500.  Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five.  Next up the Sprint Cup Series heads out west to California Speedway for the Auto Club 400, coverage begins Sunday, March 24th at 2:30 PM ET on FOX.
