No.16 3M FORD FUSION RECAP:
Biffle Finishes Second in Duel #1; Will Start 5th in Daytona 500
Daytona Beach, Fla., (February 21, 2013) —Greg Biffle followed up his second-place finish in the Sprint Unlimited with a second-place finish in the first Duel race at Daytona. His finish will put him starting fifth in Sunday’s Daytona 500.
With a 27th-place qualifying effort on Sunday, Biffle started todays first Duel at Daytona from the 14th position. He continuously moved up through the field and was up to fifth a little past halfway in the short qualifying race. Biffle made his one pit stop of the day on lap 42 for just two-tires and fuel, no adjustments were needed on his 3M Ford Fusion.
With eight laps to go the caution came out for a multi-car accident. Biffle avoided the melee and was sitting second, right behind Kevin Harvick, which was the same order they were in at the end of the Sprint Unlimited. The field took the green flag with four laps to go and Biffle once again didn’t have the drafting support to make the pass on Harvick.
Biffle crossed the finish line second, while Harvick won the first Duel qualifying race at Daytona. Juan Pablo Montoya, Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five. The Daytona 500 will air Sunday, February 24th on FOX at 1 PM with pre-race coverage beginning at 11:30 AM ET.
“I could see four to go and I was starting inside I thought I was dead in the water,” said Biffle. “If the bottom line hadn’t gotten going, if Juan wouldn’t have gotten his army together and made a run on the bottom I would have probably not ended in the back but not been where I was. When they finally got their run I was able to move down and get a shove from them. I was able to stay up there at the top. It seems like the top is the fastest and sometimes the bottom. When the four of us were out there on the bottom we were faster. I don’t know if anybody knows yet. We will just have to keep trying.”
