The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was created in 1947 when Bill France, Sr., organized a meeting of stock car promoters to form a sanctioning body. The first NASCAR-sanctioned race was held in Daytona Beach in 1948 and the organization was formally incorporated just days later.
Over the years NASCAR has made stars of many drivers and teams and has built bigger and better races by incorporating sponsors. NASCAR sanctions more than 1,500 races each year in the United States and Canada and has presented exhibition races around the world. Learn more about NASCAR.
