When preparing whitewood for final finish, 3M™ offers you the right abrasive belt for your wide belt sander.
Wide belt sanding is the process for sanding relatively level work pieces like doors, face frames and panels. Wide belt sanders range from single head to multiple heads with top and bottom functional capabilities.
The purpose of the roughing grade is to remove stock and come to a uniform dimension, leaving just enough material to develop the final finish.
The purpose of a finishing grade is to remove all previous grade scratches.
The below process will focus on a two head machine.
Suggested stock removal for a 2-head wide belt machine is a ratio of 70% then 30%.
NOTE: There should be no more than a one-grade jump between roughing and the next grade size (80-120 or 120-180).
Please note that all processes recommended on our website are an excellent starting point for rapidly achieving good finish results. However every application is unique so please 3M Technical Support at 1-888-745-4324 to discuss your specific application.
Dimension your panel to desired thickness using wide belt abrasives in grades 80 and P120 (depending on the amount of material that needs to be removed). Based on your preference, choose a sequence of either paper or cloth wide belts.
(Optional) Refine the finish using wide belt abrasives in grades P180 and P220.
