    About 3M Sustainability Intro

    Setting goals to drive progress towards sustainability is nothing new at 3M. 3M has been setting environmental goals since 1990. These goals have helped 3M dramatically reduce its environmental footprint.

    In 2010, 3M developed its first set of Sustainability Goals. These Goals go beyond the environment and now include social responsibility and economic objectives.

    Continuing to improve our environmental performance remains a key component of our 2015 Sustainability Goals, yet there is so much more we are doing:

    Environmental Stewardship

    • Reduce Volatile Air Emissions (VOC) 15% indexed to
      net sales from 2010 base year.

      by 2015 from 2010 base year, indexed to net sales
    • Reduce Waste 10%
      by 2015 from 2010 base year indexed to net sales
    • Improve Energy Efficiency 25%
      by 2015 from 2005 base year, indexed to net sales
    • Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions 5%
      by 2011 from 2006 base year, indexed to net sales
      (Goal was set in 2007)
    • Develop Water Conservation Plans
      When 3M is located in water scarce and stressed areas

    2012 Update

    • VOC Reductions:12%
    • Waste: 9% reduction
    • Energy efficiency:
      29% improvement from
      2005 base year!
    • Greenhouse Gases:
      55% reduction from 2006
      through 2011!
    • Water conservation plans:
      100% plan development

    Social Responsibility

    • Develop Community Stakeholder Engagement
      Plans for Select Manufacturing Sites
    • Promote a Road to EHS Excellence at New 3M Sites

    2012 Update

    • Approximately 113
      manufacturing sites have
      completed plans.

    • Formal processes are in
      place to assess all new
      3M facilities

    Economic Success

    • Review at least 80% of Supplier Spend in the following countries:
      China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, and Turkey

      to Drive Conformance with 3M EHS, Transportation & Labor/Human Relations Policies by 2015.
    • Enhance the Environmental Sustainability Attributes of New Products

    2012 Update
    Completed review of
    78% of supplier spend
    in targeted countries

    2011 Update
    Dozens of environmental products introduced. Some examples:

    • Scotch-Brite™ Botanical Disinfecting Wipes – a no-rinse botanical disinfecting wipe that kills 99.9 percent of household germs.
    • New Low VOC Aerosols and 3M™ Hi-Strength 94 ET Spray Adhesives with up to 50% reduction of volatile air emissions or VOCs.
    • Collimating Multi-layer
      Optical Films (CMOF) which eliminate all free-floating films, as well as the light guide from LED LCD backlights.
