Many thousands of 3M employees and retirees around the world serve their communities through 25 3M-affiliated programs and other nonprofit groups. In 2011, more than 5,000 volunteers participated in 3M-sponsored programs and 1,000 3M volunteers participated in 3M-affiliated public school programs in St. Paul, Minnesota, alone. Public school volunteers tutored students; mentored students to help them prepare for post-secondary education; or worked side-by-side with students to help them landscape and beautify their schools.
For more than 60 years, our volunteer program has emphasized education and community partnerships. Many of our programs are inspired and created by our employees themselves. For example:
3M Volunteer Match
We compound our employees’ and retirees’ volunteerism by donating funds to the organizations where they give their time. In the United States, the 3M Foundation has donated more than $4 million in the names of more than 18,000 volunteers, sending grants to more than 2,500 organizations in 50 states.

Science Training Encouragement Program (STEP)
3M’s Science Training Encouragement Program (STEP) has provided mentors to coach students and summer internships in 3M labs for high school students since 1973.
Teachers Working in Science and Technology (TWIST)
3M Teachers Working in Science and Technology (TWIST) was created in 1984 to provide an industrial research experience to middle and high school math, science, and technology teachers. Each summer, 25 teachers receive a stipend and spend six weeks in a 3M laboratory. This experience helps make science classes more relevant, as often 3M scientists and engineers visit the teachers’ classrooms to share their skills and career insights through one of our 3M Science Encouragement programs.
