Preserving and enhancing biodiversity is an important part of our environmental sustainability strategy. We protect biodiversity on our own property and work globally with partners like The Nature Conservancy to protect critical species and habitat.
The Nature Conservancy
We have donated more than $10 million to The Nature Conservancy to safeguard critical habitat and biodiversity in the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, and China.
In addition to funding, our practices also involve the efforts of 3M employees and local residents. We’re working together to protect migration zones, endangered wildlife, and rare indigenous plants. We’re also helping to improve visitor access and learning opportunities for the public.
In Brazil, a 3M grant is helping The Nature Conservancy preserve the concentration of unique and threatened plants and animals that can only be found in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest. Less than 8% of the original tropical forest remains today. The purchase of nearly 2,400 acres will manage and protect it from further clearing and environmental threats.
In 2007, we donated $1.5 million to the Nature Conservancy’s Forest Legacy Partnership in Minnesota. The partnership’s objectives are to:
Maintain and protect sustainable forest industry-related jobs in logging, forest product manufacturing, and related businesses, as well as jobs in other sectors tied to forest resources: tourism, hospitality, recreation, and more.
Preserve and protect some of Minnesota’s most biologically diverse and important wildlife habitat
Preserve water quality in critical areas, including the Upper Mississippi River Basin
Maintain and protect the availability of significant recreational opportunities in these forests, including skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, and biking.
Darkwoods—from Yellowstone to the Yukon in Canada: A $500,000 3M Foundation grant to The Nature Conservancy in 2009 will help secure the single largest private land purchase for conservation in Canadian history. This land will help restore habitat for caribou and other critical species by connecting the property with neighboring protected areas.
By using 3M™ Aluminum Conductor Composite Reinforced for line upgrades or new construction in visually sensitive areas, a utility may be able to minimize the environmental impact of a particular transmission line using the existing right-of-way and towers. Because of the increased strength and reduced sag of 3M's ACCR cable, the need to raise or rebuild towers is significantly reduced; likewise, the same properties allow for fewer towers on new construction projects
