3M Announces Brand Change To Commercial Air Filters

3M Announces Brand Change To Commercial Air Filters

In January, 2014, 3M Purification Inc. initiated a brand change of its Commercial HVAC filters from Filtrete™ to the 3M™ brand.

The decision was based on third party research 3M conducted within the commercial building facilities market segment. The research showed that 3M™ and Filtrete™ ranked first and second as most recognized brands and both had strong trust and innovation connotation. However, the 3M brand was perceived to be more related to commercial and industrial uses, while Filtrete™ related more to residential use.

The new branding was formally announced at the 2014 AHR show in New York City, the largest international HVAC industry tradeshow, and supported by formal press release to national media. Attached you will find a copy of the press release.

Sharing the 3M brand will allow Commercial HVAC filters to join other 3M products offered into the commercial building facility market under one singular trusted brand, making it easier for customers to identify our filters with the quality and innovative design they’ve come to expect from this brand.

University and college campus facility managers face tough challenges in maintaining HVAC systems. Buildings, occupant needs, and HVAC equipment are all different. Facility / building managers on university campuses supervise multiple buildings, ranging from classroom buildings, to libraries, laboratories and sometimes even hospitals. Filtration requirements, time constraints, energy, and sustainability efforts create a number of decisions that have to be researched and analyzed. Using HVAC filter and air handling unit performance data, 3M can help managers look for opportunities for improvement in associated Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Focusing on opportunities to lower energy consumption, reduce filter maintenance time and reduce waste stream volume, have provided favorable results. After careful consideration and testing, some college and university campuses converted to 3M™ Commercial HVAC filters, and have been experiencing savings in energy disposal, HVAC filter preventative maintenance labor time and overall costs. This Customer Success Story (PDF, 815 Kb) describes some of the benefits, one of the major universities in the Midwest has experienced since using 3M™ Commercial HVAC Filters. Selecting filter options with the right attributes is important in realizing these benefits.

Saving Energy Through High Quality HVAC Filters

Saving Energy Through High Quality HVAC Filters

A major university, long known for taking the lead in medical research and new technologies, began a pilot program in early 2012 among select campus buildings using the 3M filter solution. For the past year, the university has been monitoring filter performance, following replacement of conventional HVAC filters with 3M™ Commercial HVAC Filters.

Of particular interest is the test of a multifunctional research lab with strict indoor air purity requirements. Because the building’s five air handling units take in 100% outside air and the units operate continuously, it represents one of the greatest challenges for filter performance and longevity. Following a year of testing, the results were significant and impressive.

Energy Savings, from reduced kWh (reduced pressure drop) indicated a savings of 162,862 kWh (extrapolated for the entire building), representing an estimated cost savings of $19,335.
Labor savings for filter replacement was estimated to be 90%. The previous filter set required replacement of the prefilter four times per year and the final filter one time per year.
Environmental impact was reduced an estimated 40% with fewer total filters required. In addition, the reduction in Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from energy savings is estimated to be 250,000 lbs. per year.

With a significant number of buildings on campus, facility operations are a substantial ongoing cost, with energy consumption being a major component. Given the result of the one year test, the university anticipates integrating the 3M solution across its campus as conventional filter systems require replacement.
