Air or other gasses coming in contact with bottled water should be sterile filtered to help prevent secondary contamination. Microporous membrane filters made with hydrophilic membrane materials such as PTFE, are an excellent choice for their durability and high flow rates compared to other polymers.

Non-critical applications, where only particulate control is required, can often select filters made with pleated, non-woven polypropylene fibers. These filters provide high flow rates due to the amount of surface area in the pleated design as compared to depth filters.
