Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Trap Filtration in the Winery
Particle filters that help capture stray diatomaceous earth (DE) fines in wine where DE filters are used.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters can release small amounts of unwanted DE fines into the wine during processing. The rate of release is often a function of operator experience, the age of the equipment, and how well it is maintained. Many wineries will install a DE trap filter, or guard filter, just downstream of the DE filter to catch any stray DE fines before they continue in the process. Allowing DE fines to continue in the wine can lead to fouling of downstream equipment or premature plugging of more expensive final filters.
