Respiratory Protection for Exposures to the A (H7N9) Avian Influenza Virus: General Public FAQ

Respirator use During Seasonal Influenza
Respirators can help reduce exposures to certain airborne diseases, such as Influenza, but cannot eliminate exposure to or the risk of contracting any disease or infection. The respirator is designed to cover your nose and mouth. It can help reduce the number of airborne disease causing organisms (germs) you breathe. However, the respirator cannot eliminate the breathing in of all germs in the air and does not eliminate the possibility of contracting infection, illness, or disease.

Wild Fires

Wildfire Cleanup

Personal protection in the aftermath of a wildfire is an important consideration during the cleanup process. Selection of Personal Safety and Protective Equipment depends on both anticipated hazards and the task to be performed.

If the general public makes a personal decision to use respirators against the soot and ash particles that result from wildfires, a government-certified particulate respirator, such as an N95, N99, N100 disposable respirator, can be used to help reduce wearer exposure to these particles.

Oil Spills

In response to the oil spill clean-up in the Gulf of Mexico, 3M has recently seen an increase in requests for sorbents and select other personal protective equipment.

Individuals participating in oil spill related activities face a range of work-related hazards. The need for personal protective equipment (PPE) for clean-up and remediation activities is essential. This requirement applies not only to the professional worker, but to volunteers who may be used to help in clean-up activities. PPE products could include respiratory protection, head/eye/face protection products, personal air monitors, and heat stress monitors. Consult with your on-site Industrial Hygienist or Safety Manager to determine the type of PPE needed.
