Welding Filters & Helmets
3M™ Speedglas™ Products have been the industry gold standard for welding safety since 3M introduced the first commercially-viable auto-darkening welding filter in 1981. From welding helmets, shields and hardhats to respiratory protection, Speedglas products offer optimized protection, comfort and performance for the professional welder.
3M has collaborated with welders, safety engineers and ergonomic specialists to perfect the Speedglas design. The exclusive Speedglas “breathability” feature exhausts air to reduce fogging and buildup of heat, moisture and stale air. Neck and ear protection and head covers protect against spatter for enhanced safety. Adjustable headbands help to comfortably accommodate small and large head sizes, and users can even express their personality with a wide range of graphic pattern options.
Additional features and options may include:
- Lock-in option for torch and plasma cutting
- Comfort mode to reduce eye fatigue during tacking
- UV and IR radiation protection in all states
- Motion detectors for automatic on/off

Inside 3M™ Speedglas™ Technology
3M™ Speedglas™ welding helmet and shield filters have superb arc detection: within 0.1 milliseconds of the arc strike, the filter switches from clear state to dark state, returning to clear when the welding operation is finished.
This ground-breaking auto-darkening technology ensures uniform shading and minimal distortion across the entire filter viewing area. Sensitivity sensors are calibrated for indoor and outdoor welding, stable art welding, and even a special setting for when other welders are working nearby.
3M™ Speedglas™ Head Suspension is engineered to improve stability and comfort. 3M collaborated with medical experts to sculpt a design that avoids vulnerable pressure points and evenly distributes weight. As a result of this configuration, welders do not need to tighten the headband as much as on conventional welding helmets in order to achieve a secure fit. The Speedglas design cradles the head, which can help reduce neck strain and enable comfortable all-day wear.
In addition, by lowering the pivot point to just above the user’s ears, the helmet stays as close as possible to the top of the head. This reduces the forces straining neck muscles and makes the helmet feel lighter and more balanced in all positions. Improved angle adjustment allows smooth up-down, back-forth and tilt pivot action – so welders can “fit” the helmet to their exact personal preferences.
3M also offers an extensive portfolio of powered and supplied air protection products, including 3M™ Adflo™ Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR). Adflo respiratory protection systems have no external battery packs, battery cables or sharp corners, making it easy to fit into tight spaces.
Positive pressure airflow makes it easier to breathe, and supplied air systems allow users to regulate airflow and temperature for additional comfort. High efficiency particulate filters can be stacked to provide additional protection against OV/SD/CL/HC vapors.
