A History Of Innovation
1939
The first 3M™ Reflective Sheeting sign using glass beads was erected in Minneapolis, USA.
1947
3M™ Engineer Grade Reflective Sheeting was first used in the UK |
1965
3M™ Scotch-Lane™ Reflective and Non-reflective road marking tape was introduced |
1971
3M™ High Intensity Grade Reflective Sheeting was launched. It is the start of a decade of key breakthroughs that dramatically improve the brightness and durability of 3M™ Reflective Sheeting. 3M™ High Intensity encapsulated the glass beads to prevent direct contact with the top film, so maximising optical performance and resulting in a sheeting that was three times brighter than 3M™ Engineer Grade |
1976
3M™ Stamark™ Permanent Road Marking Tape was launched. |
1989
3M™ Diamond Grade™ LDP Reflective Sheeting was launched in the UK. The 3M™ Diamond Grade™ name derives from the use of tiny prisms, rather than glass beads, as the reflective element. Every square inch contains 7000 prisms making this sheeting three times brighter than the brightest glass bead product. |
1991
3M™ Diamond Grade™ VIP Reflective Sheeting was launched to meet the particular needs of drivers in the urban environment. |
1995
3M™ Diamond Grade™ Fluorescent Reflective Sheeting was launched to provide high visual impact for safety-critical signs, day and night. |
1998
3M™ Permanent Road Marker Series 290 was launched - a surface applied reflective road stud with excellent performance and durability |
2004
3M™ High Intensity Prismatic Reflective Sheeting was launched, providing higher levels of reflectivity and a longer warranty than all other makes of Class Ref 2 sheeting. |
2006
3M™ Diamond Grade™ DG³ Reflective Sheeting was launched in January for the emergency service vehicle market, providing excellent levels of reflectivity at all distances and in all weather and light conditions. The new edge sealing solution, assured seal, provides a barrier against water, dirt, oil and grease to ensure vehicle liveries mantain their aesthetic and reflective properties. |
2006
3M™ Diamond Grade™ DG³ Reflective Sheeting was launched in March for the traffic signing market. The first sheeting to use full cube corner technology, DG³ Reflective Sheeting provides excellent reflectivity in all conditions and in all light conditions. It also meets more of the minimum recommended luminance index in BS 8408:2005 than any other sheeting. |
