Assessment Centre Experience

So what are our Assessment Centres really like? We thought you’d like to hear from those who’ve experienced them:

Experience of a recent Industrial Placement student at Loughborough:

“Assessment centres provide managers with a chance to meet you and learn more about your strengths and weaknesses in order to determine if the job is right for you. Prior to arrival, nobody knew what to expect, but with four other candidates we were given the opportunity to meet people in the same situation and even make new friends, as well as meet the friendly and welcoming staff. It was clear that we were being watched from the beginning and this was unsettling to start with, but towards the end of the day we did not notice.

“The day consisted of six areas:

• Ability Tests - the most formal part of the day, but necessary to support the results of the online testing
• Presentation - gives you the chance to show your presenting skills as well as your ability to write a presentation from a pre-set topic. As long as you prepare, this can be enjoyable and provides you with useful experience
• Group exercises - great opportunity to work as a team, solving fun problems
• Interview – a chance to show managers what experiences you can draw from, behaviours you can demonstrate and why you have chosen to apply for a particular role
• Tour - an opportunity to view the working environment and meet the people.

“The day is a great experience that you won’t forget. This is an opportunity for you to show your true potential. Everybody is there to help and the other candidates are in the same position as you - to succeed everybody needs to work together.
