Warming Up the Cold-Weather Shoe Market (October 10, 2008)
Thirty years after its introduction, Thinsulate™ Insulation continues to expand its footprint. Well known as an insulator in outdoor apparel and footwear, the 3M product will soon hit the streets in a new line of casual and dress shoes. Beginning this fall, The Rockport Company will launch a line of 26 men’s and women’s everyday shoes featuring Thinsulate insulation.
“This is a new and unique application for Thinsulate insulation,” said Jeff Boehm, global sales manager, 3M Visibility and Insulation Solutions. “When you think of our insulation and footwear, you usually think of a premium performance-type boot. This moves Thinsulate insulation out into standardized footwear.”
The new Rockport line of shoes will combine the warmth of a very lightweight boot with the aesthetic of an everyday shoe. Many of the shoes in the new line are already classic best-sellers to which 200 grams of insulation have been added.
In offering everyday shoes with Thinsulate insulation, Rockport will be first to market.
“Rockport is showing great vision and decisive action in pursuing this market segment,” said Boehm. “This is an incredibly attractive product offering.”
Thinsulate insulation Celebrates 30th Anniversary
ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The creation of Thinsulate insulation is a great example of 3M's company-wide commitment to innovation and ingenuity. In the late 1930's, the “nonwoven” technology that evolved into Thinsulate insulation was born from a late night experiment conducted by 3M scientist Al Boese. Using equipment that normally heated and kneaded rubber for taping materials, Boese used the machine to bind and create microfibres from clumps of cellulose acetate. While the new microfibre technology had many applications, 3M did not begin testing the material for insulation purposes until 1973, a good five years before Thinsulate insulation made its official debut.
