Positioned to win!

Making Progress Possible has always been the theme of Team3M. In 2014 this will be materialized further, by increasing the professionality of training, measuring and coaching the riders. Last week we saw another example of that: The first group of Team3M riders, were measured to find the perfect sitting position on their bikes, through the Guru System of the Energy Lab. This system determines the best position of a rider, in order to achieve their maximum power output.

In November all Team3M riders’ maximum power output was measured. At the end of January, the time trial riders were measured again to see their progress after months of training.

Along with Lotto Belisol (Worldtour) and Topsport Vlaanderen Baloise (Pro continental), the riders of Team3M got the opportunity to be scanned by the Energylab. Energylab has a state-of-the-art bike fitting lab. Their motto:” The bike needs to be adapted to the cyclist and not the other way around”.

Measurement Program

“The analysis of our Team3M riders consist of different steps.” says Team3M General Manager Bernard Moerman, “First they have an intake interview. These questions are the basis for the further analysis of the rider. Next is a bodyscan, this gives them an idea of their fat percentage, bone density, muscle mass and moisture. This scan along with the weight and height of the rider are a guiding principle for this season. It also indicates if the rider should lose some weight, without losing muscles mass. Followed by a screening for flexibility. Both the knee flexors and knee extensors, hip flexors, hip extensors as well as the iliotibial band (side of leg and hip) are screened for flexibility. The movement possibility on the bike is determined by the length of the muscles.

Then they scanned the Cannondale Slice bike, which we use to ride time trials, with the Retül 3D measurement system. These measurements are transferred to the Guru fitbike in the Energylab. While cycling on this dynamic Guru test bike, they adjust the measurements based on different parameters (angles of joints, position of the knee compared to front of foot, knee trajectory, …). By checking all movements during cycling, and the body analysis, they have a better view where our riders should improve themselves.”

The Energy Lab determines what would be the ideal combination between comfort and efficiency for each individual rider. All data as well as an individual training program, is shared with the each rider afterwards. “The end result must enable our Team3M riders to ride their bikes in the most ideal conditions”, says Moerman.

On the video, we can watch live the analysis of one of the Team3M riders. As you can see, the riders have blue patches on their body to do a motion capture on video (see the monitor in front of them). With the analysis and advise of the experts, this will lead to instant improvements. It could be coincidence, but it is a fact that two of the riders won a race, in the weekend after this fitting test! Congratulations to Michael Vingerling and Joren Segers!
