Kreiz Breizh 2013

 Kreiz Breizh 2013

Daily Report by David Philips

Day 1 Calanhel - Plouray

A very rainy day, on a very difficult track. In the first race hour an average of up to 47km per hour. Despite the high speed a large leading group of about 40 riders saw their chance to escape, among them VERKINDEREN, RATCLIFF and TERPSTRA. The peloton did not let this happen and the leading group was caught up again. Shortly afterwards about 20 riders escaped, including TERPSTRA, they came out with an advantage of 2 minutes. Upon entering the local round 5 riders escaped from the leading group including Van Der Lijke (Rabobank) and Terpstra. In the final round the rider of Bretagne had to let go and Mike and three others raced to the finish. Mike became 4th.

Day 2 Stage A TT Carhaix - Carhaix

Mike had to defend his 4th place in the time trial. A wonderful loop track, a real time trial. The weather was really bad again, it didn’t stop raining. Mike had to deal with a dragging rear brake, and had to give in a few seconds. Mike lost 1 minute to the winner Van Der Lijke, and dropped back to 9th place in the general classification. The other riders of Team3M spared themselves a bit for the next stages in the time trial because we had no specialists in the TT.

Day 2 Stage B Le Saint - Poerdut

On paper, the least difficult ride, but again because of the weather it was still tricky. Tremendous gusts of wind and torrential rain. Little to say about this stage and we headed off on a mass sprint. In the last 3km the later winner Corbel escaped and could keep a two bike length on Wouter who drove a brilliant spurt – becoming second best - that was pulled by Tom GOOVAERTS.

Day 3 Plouguernevel - Rostrenen

Very hard stage, constantly up and down, narrow roads, rain and wind. Rapidly in the initial phase a group of 15 riders escaped including Verkinderen. They drove 2 min away fast and Team3M was in a good position. Mike just had to ride in front and be alert, WIPPERT, GOOVAERTS, RATCLIFF kept Mike on the 2nd line in the peloton. Euskadi controlled the race and could catch up the leading group on 50km from the finishing line, everything had to be redone. Upon entry of Rostrenen there was a big collision where Wippert and GOOVAERTS were involved, without any major issues, but for Wippert the race was over. GOOVAERTS could still return to the peloton. Rabobank controlled, and at 8km of the finishing line TERPSTRA proceeded to an attack, Van Der Wijst (Jo Piels) jumped in, and they could ride off 23 sec. Mike gave everything he could to still be in the final, but the peloton reacted very hard and arrived 3sec away of the finishing line. Mike was beaten in the sprint by a real sprinter, so no shame there to finish on the second place. TERPSTRA won the prize of COMBATIVENESS.

It was a very successful Kreiz BREIZH, with a 4th - 2nd - 2nd and 9th place final classification in a 2.2 race.
