Sensational news for our Continental Cycling Team: Team3M received and accepted an invitation from the organization committee of the Tour of China to participate in this 13 stages long 2.1 race.
It takes place in the second half of September 2013 . “It would be a wonderful closure of our first season”, says Bernard Moerman, General Manager of Team3M “and a great challenge, racing with the World Tour Team once more.”
“During their first season Team3M showed great performance in many races. With over a dozen of podium-places, the sportive targets for the season are in reach”, confirms Sports Director David Philips. “Our aim is to develop the sportive capacity of the riders. Under our guidance Thomas Vanhaecke, Timothy Stevens and Joren Segers became already Regional Champion this year, but also our Team3M U23 member Yuval Dolin became Israëlian Champion. development is also stimulated by participating in races every now and then that are above our level. By participating in these races, the riders become conscious of their main areas of improvement. However in some of those races, we have also booked remarkable successes. For example at the Dutch National Championships, where Team3M was racing against the ProTour teams. Our Mike Terpstra appeared to be the best non-world tour rider, leaving about 50 professionals behind him. In other multi-stage races, even on the high .1 level, Team3M has also performed well with a top-3 stage podium in the team-rankings. On our own ‘Continental’ level, we have proven that we have some climbing, sprinting and time trials talented riders.”
For 3M as the title sponsor of the cycling team, the invitation to participate in the Tour of China is also seen as an accomplishment, says Ronald Faas - Corporate Marketing Manager for 3M in the Benelux and Liaison for Team3M: “As an innovative global company, 3M was amongst the first private foreign investors in China, about 30 years ago. China is a very important market for 3M. We invest a lot in R&D and manufacturing in the country, employing around 6,000 people over there. It resulted in the title of ‘Most Admired Foreign-invested Enterprise in China’ and ‘Most Admired Company in Asia top 20’ amongst many other forms of recognition. Therefore it is quite amazing that our cycling team will now also expand their footprint and have the Tour of China as the first non-European race on its calendar.”
For our bike-sponsor Cannondale, this is likewise a very good representation as China is a big target-market. Clothing sponsor Riposte is also happy as this race becomes a ‘home-game’.
Bernard Moerman is also more than happy with this new opportunity: “Maybe even flattered”, he says. “It is not very common for a starting team to be invited for a big race like this. It proves that the performance and reputation that we have built up so quickly, can pay off. This is a good sign and can mean a refreshing element for the cycling sports and industry. Team3M staff and riders will work hard to get everything organized for this great closure of the 2013 season. So far, our team has mostly participated in the Benelux and the rest of West-and South Europe. The logistic operation to race on a different continent, will be an experience on itself. Something we really look forward to!”
