Frank Boeckx, Directeur Sportif II for Team3M, reviews the ‘Omloop Het Nieuwsblad’ of Saturday June 29th 2013.
190 riders came to the start of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, a race in the Belgian Top competition. 17 hills in the Flemish Ardennes made the 190 kilometers race very hard.
The first 50 kilometers were very hard because of the weather conditions. At the base of the Taaienmountain it came to a impactful collision, where also three of our Team3M riders fell. Timothy Stevens and Tom Goovaerts came back after a long chase, but for Thomas Vanhaecke this meant the end of the race.
Wouter Wippert was having an ‘off’ day and lost his feeling with the peloton at 90 kilometers. At that time a group of 13 riders, including Frederik Verkinderen, led the race. In the large peloton of about 60 riders, there were still 4 Team3M riders: Lewis Rigaux, Sibrecht Pieters, Timothy Stevens and Tom Goovaerts. In the final meters to the finish an outstanding Dimitri Claeys rode solo to the finishing line, leaving the leading group behind him.
Frederik Verkinderen had to give up due to cramps. Our others Team3M riders kept fighting and with result: Tom Goovaerts became 13th, Sibrecht Pieters 17th and Timothy Stevens 18th.
Lewis, who was struggling with some technical problems, was 67th. Team3M was 2nd in the team classification for the Top competition.
