Team3M 2014 - Selecting with TEMPO

For the 2014 season, the names of 19 Team3M cyclists have already been announced. Five cyclists and the two trainees from the current team will remain part of Team3M in 2014. Their names are Jimmy Janssens, Timothy Stevens, Joren Segers, Michael Vingerling, Jens Schuermans and the 2 trainee cyclists Gertjan De Vos and Stef Van Zummeren.

With a view to the selection of new cyclists for the 2014 season, Team3M received around 100 applications from candidates. To ensure that the selection process is conducted as objectively as possible, a proprietary scouting instrument was devised in-house. This tool allows to screen aspiring cyclists on an objective and data-driven basis. This is done based on a number of criteria such as growth potential, team spirit, talent and more.

The tool has been dubbed ’TEMPO’, which stands for:
T: Teamwork
E: Eagerness to learn
M: Mental strength
P: Performance
O: Outstanding talent

A ranking has been compiled based on the scores of all cyclists on each of the above criteria. This score ultimately determined whether or not the cyclist made the selection. The cyclists of the current team (2013 season) were also made to undergo the screening.

“This is also based on the Six Sigma tools which are applied throughout 3M Company”, says Ronald Faas, Team3M liaison and certified Black Belt in the Six Sigma methodology. “It has helped to identify the most important success-factors and select those candidates that will have the greatest impact on future success of Team3M and the individual riders. It is a very practical tool on itself, but also a proofpoint of how the partnership between 3M and the Team is paying off.

Cycling Center's General Manager Bernard Moerman: “Detecting growth potential – around 20 to 25% - is hugely important. As a basic requirement, the cyclists need to be able to turn in a good performance. In order to develop however, a number of other characteristics play important roles too. Cyclists need to have enough fighting spirit and a real drive to win, whilst at the same time being prepared to serve the team. They need to be ‘coachable’. That is why we are now fielding a team with an average age of some 2 years younger than the 2013 selection. An added benefit of this rejuvenation drive is that we are able to retain 60 to 70% of the cyclists, which allows us to continue to work together over a longer stretch of time. “

Sports director David Philips adds: “In addition, we were keen to maintain the international composition of the team. Alongside 13 Belgians, we now have 5 Dutch cyclists and 1 Lithuanian. In 2014, we will no longer have a team of under-23s in place. Because of the UCI rules and the implications of these rules, we were unable to enter the same competition with 2 teams from one and the same entity. We have now chosen to conclude alliances with junior teams whose main focus is the training of youngsters. We check out the talent in their ranks and we get the first choice to recruit young talented riders for our own 2015 season team.”
