Iberdrola Chooses 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fluid For Substation
As part of a 400 million Euro investment plan, the Spanish electrical supply utility, Iberdrola, is installing 17 new electrical substations in the city of Madrid after a series of fires followed by blackouts. All of the substations will include fire suppression systems utilizing 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. Although there were several alternatives available, Iberdola conducted a full-scale evaluation to determine the best alternative and decided to use Novec 1230 for the substation protection. One crucial reason was the very high safety margin, compared to CO2 which works at a lethal design concentration. Other critical aspects for Iberdrola have been the excellent fire control performance and the outstanding environmental characteristics of Novec 1230, which was clearly outperforming other fire suppression agents like water mist, CO2 or Inertgas.
