Effective pre-filtration is the first stage in developing a robust wine packaging process. It is important to balance the removal of spoilage against stripping the wine of its character and body. At initial stage efficient low cost depth filtration such as 3M™ HN Series in a traditional filter press starts the removal of high volumes of spoilage organisms such as unwanted proteins, yeasts, bacteria and amorphous solids etc.

For finer clarification in the early stages, 3M Purification offers you the Series which are filter cartridges featuring our innovative Advanced Pleat Technology (APT) technology which packages a higher usable surface area in the cartridge. Higher surface areas typically deliver longer life.
As a further offering to the early stages of production 3M Purification also offer Series tubular cartridges which again are absolute-rated all polypropylene filters with the enhancement of graded density which can be like having two filters in one.
Lenticular filters such as 3M Purification’s 3M™ Zeta Plus™ HT and MHT Series are an enhancement to traditional filter presses and plate and frame installations. They contain similar media to traditional filter sheets but with the benefit of integral cartridge construction which significantly shortens set-up and changeover times with the added benefit of being used in sealed stainless housings. A sealed housing overcomes the leakage and edge contamination often associated with traditional filter presses. During the water treatment in the cellar (rinse water of the wine tanks, preparation water for inoculation), it is critical to optimise the viability of the micro-organisms utilised for inoculation (yeasts and bacteria). High quality water is also important to avoid the effects of cork taint.
The primary substances responsible for mouldy tastes in wine, known as cork taint, are chloroanisoles (2, 4, 6-TCA trichloroanisole and 2, 3, 4, 6-TeCA tetrachloroanisole).
The incriminated molecules are primarily TCA essentially originating from cork, TBA originating from polish, treated wood and certain synthetic materials and TeCA which is a contamination caused through contact with certain filtration earths, vats and polluted wooden barrels.

Series are an excellent option for the first stage. They are a low cost tubular depth filter which offers the perfect solution . They are manufactured using the process of extruding polypropylene fibres prior to thermally bonding the fibres together. They contain no binder resins and are of a rigid self supporting construction.
